  1. The Cab Scene By James, Catherine, Katharine and Matt.

  2. In this scene Brothers Terry Malloy and Charlie ‘The Gent’ discuss Terry's disloyalty with the mob.

  3. This scene explores the ideas of + Redemption + Loyalty

  4. REDEMPTION In the cab Scene Charlie redeems himself by sacrificing his life to give terry the chance to “be somebody”. Before Charlie makes this choice, Terry explains his heart break to his brother in how “I could have been somebody” Terry sacrificed his career and chance to have a life after years as an orphan to make the mob happy and for them to win money. Charlie was in on the plan with the mob, and disappointed terry by not giving him the chance.

  5. During the mid shot, Terry explains to Charlie his disappointment. “You don’t understand! I could’ve been a contender. I could’ve had class and been somebody. Real class. Instead of a bum, let’s face it, which is what I am. It was you, Charley.” At this point Charlie now sees what he has to do to make everything fair and even.

  6. As the scene continues Charlie pulls out his gun, showing his brother how serious the mob are about Terry’s disloyalty.

  7. Charley takes a long, fond look at Terry. Then he glances quickly out the window. TERRY It was you, Charley… CHARLEY (turning back to Terry, his tone suddenly changed) Okay— I’ll tell him I couldn’t bring you in. Ten to one they won’t believe it, but— go ahead, blow. Jump out, quick, and keep going… and God help you from here on in.

  8. At the end of the cab scene Kazan leaves us left feeling a sense of redemption for Charlie as he now has accepted that it was him the reason for Terry being a “confused kid”. As a big brother Charlie didn’t do as he was supposed to and help Terry to make the right choices and guide him to a happy life .

  9. Which is now why Charlie has accepted to take any punishment the mob has for Terry later on we see being death. Fully redeeming himself and giving Terry an opportunity to be somebody.

  10. LOYALTY The cab scene is all based around Loyalty as the whole scene wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for Terry’s disloyalty. Not only Terry but Charlie also shows his loyalty to his brother in this scene.

  11. CHARLIE Charlie demonstrates his loyalty to Terry with his redemption, risking his life to show where in the end his true loyalty lies.

  12. CAMERA SHOTS In the Cab scene the shots are all medium shots to create a scene of equality for the viewer and Charlie and Terry. The Medium shots also show how Charlie and Terry are now equal, being different from earlier where charlie was always in low angle shots with the mob to show his power.

  13. LIGHTING The lighting in the cab scene is reasonably dark yet between the two brothers an equal amount of dark and light, this lighting demonstrates in using another cinematic device how the two become equal as Charlie redeems himself.
