  1. Walk, Jog, and Run Progression Lesson Myron Dejournett & Shane Hanley

  2. Activity Title: Tortoise and Hare Relay Grade Level: 2nd Location: Area outside marked ahead of time if weather allows, if not then inside the gym. Duration: 15-20minutes Skill: Locomotor skills of Walking, jogging, and running and the progression on of each of these skills.

  3. NASPE Standard • Standard 2 - The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.

  4. INTASC Standard: • Principle #5: The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.

  5. Indiana Physical Education Academic Standard • Standard 5: Health-Related Physical Fitness, Physical education teachers have a broad and comprehensive understanding of the components and principles of health-related physical fitness, as well as the strategies and skills to help student’s maintain physical activity and personal fitness for a lifetime.

  6. What to look for: • Objectives: Students will be able to identify and demonstrate a progression of walking, jogging, and running. • Students will be able to demonstrate these progression with the use of a manipulative tool such as a baton.

  7. Materials needed for this Lesson: • Cones (Mark designated areas outside to perform tasks and complete lesson • Batons (each with different instructions such as, Long stride walk, run swing arms, and so on).

  8. Get Ready… • Stretching • Balance • Jumping Jacks

  9. Get Set… • Activity will be explained to students, including instructions, safety, demostration, and the purpose of the lesson. • Students will be divided into groups of 3-4, eahc student will be given a beginner level baton to start the lesson. • Students will start lesson by demonstrating the given instruction on the baton.

  10. GO… • After performing the given baton for a lap, the students will then had off (trade) the baton with someone in their group. • Students will then perform that baton and so on. • Students will then be given the intermediate level batons and perform these tasks. • The students will them be given the advanced level batons and perform those tasks.

  11. Fun for ALL • Allow time for students questions • Modify distance needed to perform tasks

  12. Safety • Make sure there is no debris that students may trip or fall over • Instruct students that at all times hands and feet are to stay to themselves. • Make sure students have the proper foot ware the activity.
