  1. Surfboard Fin Configurations Explained Understanding the differing fin configurations is key since there are different setups for each riding style. Using the best surf fins and getting the most out of your gear is the ideal approach. •Single Fin. A single fin box is the traditional surfboard fin configuration. It’s best for fast, straight shot surfing. They allow for stability, control, and predictability to your longboard. •Twin Fins/Dual Fin. This configuration will make your surfboard fun, playful, and maneuverable, but they aren’t recommended for big-wave riding and are commonly used on shortboards. •Thruster/Tri-Fin. This is the most common configuration and is seen on a variety of surfboard shapes and sizes. Considered a universal (beginner to pro) they add stability, control, and maneuverability that anyone can excel on. •Quad Fin. This setup offers speed by channeling water to the end of the surfboard and out the tail for acceleration. Good for big-wave surfing by adding stability and help in generating dive through turns. •Five Fin. This configuration is a customizable setup since not all five fins are used at once. The surfer is able to mix and match setups depending on the type of surfing they are about to do – essentially creating a single, twin, thruster or quad setup depending on mood and surf conditions. •2+1. This option combines the single fin box of the longboard in the middle with two regular thruster side fin boxes on either side. This configuration is commonly used on eggs, funboards and logs.
