  4. The Facts - Packaging still a problem • Supermarkets still produce more packaging than smaller shops and markets and less of it can be recycled, an LGA survey has revealed. • In its second investigation into the weight of retailer packaging, the LGA revealed that most major retailers have cut the amount of packaging they use but the proportion that is recyclable has changed very little. Lesson objective - To enter into a discussion about the problems associated with too much packaging on products.

  5. The Retail Survey • Eight retailers were investigated for the survey. The supermarket with the heaviest packaging was Lidl (813g). Along with Marks & Spencer, it also had the lowest level of packaging that could be recycled – 62%. 6. Reducing waste and costs to the tax payer! • “Reducing packaging is vital if we are to avoid paying more landfill tax and European Union (EU) fines, which could lead to cuts in frontline services and increases in council tax,” • Councils have to pay £32 in tax for every tonne of rubbish sent to landfill. That figure is set to rise to £48 by 2010. In addition, councils face EU fines of £150 for every tonne dumped from 2010 – a move that could cost an estimated £200m by 2013.
