  2. IIE IAB Coaching/Advising The Next Generation of IE Leaders • Background: • A need to define and select the “next great idea” • A sub-team of IAB members was formed • M. Abab – Leader • Dr. J. Barany, Steve Snelling, Donna Calvert, Patrick Foxworthy, Natalie Keller, Kaz Takeda, Dennis Oates, V. Wakefield New Member: Dr M. Thomas • Conducted a survey and the survey said: • Mentorship => 11 • IAB Annual Report => 6 • Other ideas: • Case studies illustrating the impact of Industrial Engineering on profitable growth. • Develop a recruitment program to bring people into the discipline by showing its breath of opportunity.

IIE IABCoaching/Advising The Next Generation of IE Leaders • Reviewed and evaluated the past attempts, as a reference, to establish an effective program: • The program did not prove to fully serve the community’s needs because: • The needs (mentorship type) of the students were not clearly defined • Aimed for students only – narrow audience • Students were primarily looking for jobs • International students non IIE members complicated the process and demand • Cumbersome process to identify and match mentors and mentees • Tracking of the mentees, mentors and their corresponding action status was too labor intensive for the IIE staff • Contracting the activities was considered but cost prohibitive • Unacceptable response time and delays from the mentees hence the mentors disengaged

IIE IAB Coaching/Advising The Next Generation of IE Leaders • The Team Determined: • That the old format was inefficient, costly and therefore unacceptable to meet the needs of the community • The “Mentorship” concept needed to: • Be more clearly defined with expected boundaries • Have greater commitment from the industry (IAB) • Be simpler and cost effective approach and serve a larger population

IIE IAB Coaching/Advising The Next Generation of IE Leaders • Intent: • Create an infrastructure of industry leaders and experts that will share career guidance and suggestions to those in the profession of the Industrial Engineering in need of help to navigate their career • The term “mentorship” may not be appropriate for what the community needs at this stage

IIE IAB Coaching/Advising The Next Generation of IE Leaders • Approach • Develop a process that will provide periodic interaction of industry representatives (panel discussions) addressing the participants’ needs in the spirit of genuinely helping with their career • Questions can be sent in advance for the panel to review and prepare for • Identify the IAB industry representatives (leaders/experts) • Share expertise and knowledge and help navigate • Partners: IIE, IIE IAB, the Young Professional and the IE community at large • Serving: IIE Members, recent graduates or those who are in the early stage of their IE career (up to 5 years)

IIE IAB Coaching/Advising The Next Generation of IE Leaders • Expected Behavior and outcome: • A committed partnership among the stakeholders • Open communication, genuine guidance to achieve success • Participants take personal responsibilities • Positive influence in the participants’ career development • Share perspective, insights and encouragement • Realistic and up front about expectations • The sessions are not intended as a “job shop” but guidance to assist in determining: • Where they are • Where they want to go • Explore possibilities and how to help move toward their goals..

IIE IAB Coaching/Advising The Next Generation of IE Leaders • The Plan: • Use the IAB Track at the IIE Annual Conference, to have an Industry panel discussion on Coaching/Advising • Following the panel, set aside time in the same room for young IEs (or students) to try and match up with a coach/advisor (either from the panel, or other senior IEs in attendance) • Let the real mentorship process begin, at the will of the parties, here ! • Get help from IIE’s Young Professionals group – “talking up” this session to young working IEs (and students) • Work with IIE to develop a series of quarterly, Webinars that feature a 2- 4 persons, panel of industry experts to talk about Coaching/Advising and take questions from the audience • Questions either sent in ahead of time or asked live from those calling in

IIE IAB Coaching/Advising The Next Generation of IE Leaders • The Plan • The IAB will partner with the IIE Young Professionals Group • The IAB will partner with IIE Headquarters in setting up the quarterly, Coaching/Advising Webinars • Plan to focus mainly on career advice • Not on help with specific job search

IIE IAB Coaching/Advising The Next Generation of IE Leaders • What We Have Done: • Developed and documented the details of the agreed approach • Reviewed with the stakeholders and gained their approval and commitment to support • Conducted our first Webinar in March • Over 50 attendees • Panelists: Roman Hlutkowsky and Doug Rabeneck • It was a success • Our first live panel discussion in 2012 Conference • Panelists: Roman Hlutkowsky, Deb Laudenslager; Hitesh Bajaj; Hans Demmel; Michael Mueller • Moderators: Majid Abab, Kaz Takeda

IIE IAB Coaching/Advising The Next Generation of IE Leaders • Next Steps: • Create a list of potential panel members to participate in the webinars • The success of this initiative is dependent on the engagement of the IAB members! • Create a list of volunteers that will be chairing/coordinating the webinars on a rotational basis. • The success of this initiative is dependent on the engagement of the IAB members! • Keep up the partnership and lead the next generation of IE’s toward Success
