Author ~ Katherine Paterson • Born October 31, 1932 in China • Her parents were American missionaries who served in China and later Katherine was a missionary in Japan • At age 5 she and her family returned to America (North Carolina) from China • Because of her families missionary work, Katherine moved a lot and was an outcast in school • Most of her award winning novels deal with children who are social outcasts

  3. Chapter 1 ~ Jesse Oliver Aarons, Jr. • Protagonist • Middle child ~ has 2 older sisters (Ellie and Brenda) and 2 younger sisters (May Belle and Joyce Ann) • Lives/works on a farm in Virginia with his impoverished family • Dad is a construction worker in Washington DC and mom is a stay at home mom • Is in the 5th grade and aspires to be the fastest runner in his class/school • Enjoys drawing but hides his love of art from his father • Wants a better relationship with his family

Chapter 2 ~Leslie Burke • Protagonist • Has just moved into the old Perkins farm which is next door to the Aarons’ family farm • She is a tomboy who is also in the 5th grade • She dresses in a very casual manner and does not wear “girl” clothes • She is intelligent, well-read, and comes from a wealthy family • Both of her parents are writers and “hippies” • She is an outcast at her new school • Leslie comes up with the idea to create Terabithia

  5. Chapter 3 ~The Fastest Kid in the Fifth Grade • All of the boys at Lark Creek Elementary school race during recess to see who is the fastest boy in the class/school • Jess has been training for the first race all summer • Leslie wins the race

Chapter 4 ~Rulers of Terabithia • Jess wants to escape feeling like an outcast in his own family and Leslie wants to escape feeling like an outcast at school • The two friends build a fort in the woods • Jess is the King and Leslie is the Queen of this secret/magical kingdom • The kids swing on a rope, that is attached to a tree, across a creek to enter Terabithia • Terabithia can only be accessed during times of great sorrow or joy

Chapter 5 ~The Giant Killers • The giants represent all the people in Jess and Leslie’s lives that bully them, make fun of them, boss them around, are mean to them, don’t understand them, and tease them. • “Leslie liked to make up stories about the giants that threatened Terabithia, but they both knew that the real giant in their lives was Janice Avery” (61). • Other “giants” ~ Wilma Dean, Bobby Sue Henshaw, Gary Fulcher, Ellie Aarons, Brenda Aarons, and Mr. and Mrs. Aarons.

  8. Chapter 6 ~The Coming of Prince Terrien • Jess gives Leslie a puppy for Christmas. She names the puppy Prince Terrien. They decide that the puppy is also the official Court Jester because he is so funny. • Leslie give Jess a box of water colors, 24 tubes of color, 3 brushes and a pad of heavy art paper.

  9. Chapter 7 ~The Golden Room • Jess is jealous of Leslie’s close relationship with her father, Bill. • Jess helps Leslie and Bill paint their living room gold and in so doing, Jess bonds with Mr. Burke.

  10. Chapter 8 ~Easter • Mr. Burke is laid-off from his construction job and cannot afford to buy his children new clothes for Easter. • Leslie has never been to church before and attends Easter services with the Aarons family. • May Belle is afraid that is Leslie does not attend church, read the Bible and believe in God that she will go to hell if she dies.

  11. Chapter 9 ~The Evil Spell • It is pouring rain in Virginia. • The creek that Jess and Leslie swing across to enter. Terabithia has risen and the current is a lot stronger than it ever has been. • The kids cross the creek any way. Leslie seems to have no fear and Jess is terrified. • When they leave Terabithia, Jess vows to wait for the rain to stop before he goes back.

  12. Chapter 10 ~The Perfect Day • Miss Edmunds takes Jess to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. • They spend the entire day there and Jess has the time of his life. • When Jess returns home from the museum, he is told that Leslie is dead.

  13. Chapter 11 ~NO! • “They found the Burke girl this morning down by the creek” (131). • That old rope you kids been swinging on broke. They think she musta hit her head on something when she fell” (131). • At first Jess denies that Leslie is dead. Then he feels guilty for going to the museum without her. • As a result of Leslie’s death, Jess’s dad begins to pay more attention to him and Jess’s mom and sisters are nicer to him.

  14. Chapter 12 ~Stranded • Jess and his family go to the Burke’s house to pay there respects. • Jess returns to school and is treated differently by his peers. • Jess is angry at Leslie for leaving him alone and throws all of his art supplies into the creek. • Jess’s dad consoles him.

  15. Chapter 13 ~Building the Bridge • Jess goes to Terabithia for the first time since Leslie died. • He crosses the creek on a log, not on the rope swing. • Unbeknownst to Jess, May Belle followed him to Terabithia. • May Belle gets stuck on the log and Jess has to rescue her. • After May Belle’s near fall, Jess builds a bridge across the creek. • Jess invites May Belle to Terabithia and tells her she is the new queen.
