    2. 8/10/2012 World War II 2 Japan Seeks a Pacific Empire Like Hitler, Japan’s military leaders wanted an empire. Overcrowded, shortage of raw materials Expansion into Manchuria, China in 1931. Went to war with China. To increase resources, looked to European colonies of Southeast Asia.

    3. 8/10/2012 World War II 3 Surprise Attack on Pearl Harbor August 1940, American cracked Japanese secret code. Know of plans for Southeast Asia. U.S. sent aid to China and cut off oil shipments to Japan Japan planned massive attack on Southeast Asia and Pacific at the same time. Attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Sunk 18 ships, nearly the whole Pacific Fleet and killed 2400 Americans Roosevelt called in “a date which will live in infamy”

Idea of “Asia for the Asians”, but really came as conquerors. Bataan Death March – cruel treatment of native people and prisoners of war.

    5. 8/10/2012 World War II 5 The Allies Strike Back April 1942 United States and Australia struck back. Bombed Tokyo. Little damage, but proved Japanese could be attacked. Battle of Midway, Admiral Nimitz fought the Japanese. His troops were outnumbered 4 to 1 in ships and planes. Sent American planes to attack Japanese ships. American pilots destroyed 332 Japanese planes and Japanese withdrew. Turned the tide of the war in the Pacific against the Japanese.

Hitler’s goal was not only the conquest of Europe but enslaving Europe’s people and forcing them to work for Germany’s prosperity Anyone who was not German, was unfit for the Third Reich.
