  4. Kyrene Traditional Academy -Sureño Campus • (KTA) is a program of choice. The acquisition of core skills, primarily through direct instruction, in a highly structured environment is viewed as the foundation of the learning process. Students are taught independence, citizenship, and self responsibility for their learning. Priority is given to the fundamental tools of learning in the core academic areas of phonics and reading; grammar; spelling and writing; mathematics; social studies; and science. We believe that students need a structured learning environment that minimizes instructional distractions in order to provide them with the strongest opportunity for academic success. • By selecting KTA, parents, students and staff are responsible for and committed to supporting the KTA programs, upholding standards, and following the rules and policies of the school.

  5. Key Components of KTA • Direct instructional model for phonics, reading, writing and math • Spalding Reading and Saxon Math are being implemented successfully after extensive summer training by staff • Jr. Great Books implemented in October 2012 • School wide discipline plan • SPARC : Skills Practice and Re-focus Class at lunch recess • 3-B’s: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible • Clear and consistent expectations in all areas of school • Prescribed student dress • 100% of students have been in compliance! 

  9. Tips for Parents • Students must read 10-20 minutes per night! Research shows that this increases vocabulary by thousands of words during the elementary school years and raises test scores, comprehension and cognitive capacity. • Limit video games and internet use: no more than one hour per day! New research links internet addiction to brain scans similar to those addicted to cocaine and meth. (Newsweek 7/16/12). • Engage in meaningful conversation with your child daily! Research shows that when adults are interested in what children have to say, it builds self esteem and confidence for a lifetime.

  10. KTA is a GREAT place to learn! • We are excited to have you as parents, guardians, and partners in your child’s educational journey! • We are committed to providing educational opportunities that are rigorous, consistent, and exciting for each and every child! • We are a staff committed to your child’s success!
