  1. Ontology and Taxonomy Developmentfor GEOSSas a part of AR-09-01: GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI) Japan and IEEE

  2. Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) What is “ultra-sonic method” to measure air temperature? What is “MODIS”?

  3. DB DB DB DB DB DB DB DB DB DB DB Necessity of Ontology เกษตรกรรม biology term 気象用語 Data cannot be accessed and used without knowing data name/definition 农业 temp 농업 Agriculture term Hydrology term Climatology Air temperature Landuse Classification schema a specification of a conceptualization: “Ontology” Should help find data. Health Science

  4. Challenge for Data Interoperability Very Large Image Data Integrating Observation Data and Model Simulation Data Stream from Sensor Networks SyntaxInteroperability Proposal of Standard Schema and Interface. It is not always enough for diversified Geo-spatial Information. Need to Manage VeryLarge& Heterogeneous Data Need more focus support Semantic Interoperability Semantic Interoperability for geo-spatial data by using data definitions, terminologies, relations, gazetteers (Ontology ) etc.

  5. ○ Develop Ontology Registry. Collect available ontology, taxonomy, terminology, gazetteer. Provide ontology registry service such as visualization, comparison. ○ Support development of a consistent ontology through registry of ontological information - GEO participants can compare and analyze available ontology. - GEO participants can develop more interoperable and appropriate ontology by referring to the registry. Proposal of New sub-Task

  6. Underlying idea of the proposed task Ontology Development in each domain Human Health, Disaster, Weather , Climate Water Resource, Agriculture, Ecosystem, Oceans. Help develop consistent ontology in each domain though providing ontology/terminology registry service as a part of GCI Registration of ontology Additional information on relationships of different ontology Visualize available ontology Help compare and analyze existing ontology in developing new ones • Ontology Registry Development • Ontology • Taxonomy , Terminology • Gazetteers 1.Registry service of available Ontology 2.Defining/ Uncovering Semantic Relations 3.Ontology Visualization /Editing Tools

  7. Ontology Registry clearinghouse etc. hasPart C A B metadata E hasPart subClassOf code list Ref e.g. SWEET (NASA) Gene Ontology Ontology D namespace F Concept and association refer_to Definition Technical terms TerminologyTaxonomy Category e.g. AGROVOC (FAO) LCCS (FAO) Is-a, part-of Technical terms Gazetteer Ontology Registry Coordinates and geographic names e.g. GeoNames Server, Alexandria Digital Library

  8. Ontology Registry by Wiki Starting with the list of available ontology

  9. Editing Tool “Semantic Media Wiki” allows tagging. http://semantic-mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Introduction_to_Semantic_MediaWiki

  10. Gazetteer Collecting available gazetteers for comparison.
