  1. Ocean Motions Students: You must copy into your notes any sentences that are in black ink.

  2. I. Waves The movement of energy through a body of water.

  3. Majority of ocean waves are caused by wind.Other sources include: boats, underwater earthquakes (tsunamis), animal life, etc.

  4. The size of a wave depends on: • The strength of the wind. • Light wind = little waves • Strong wind = huge waves Length of time wind has blown. Distance wind has traveled across the water.

  5. Water molecules move in circles in a wave.(See what happens to the turtle.)

  6. Draw the picture below into your notes.Label all parts!

  7. What Causes Waves?

  8. What Causes Waves? • Most waves are caused by wind

  9. II. Tides: The daily rise and fall of Earth’s water on its coastlines.

  10. Tides are caused from the gravitational pull of the moon and sun.

  11. Spring Tide: sun and moon in straight line = extreme high and low tidesDraw the diagram below into your notes.

  12. Neap Tide: sun and moon form right angles.=minimal high and low tidesDraw the diagram below into your notes.

  13. Tide Cartoons: Don’t get yourself stuck when high tide comes in!

  14. What Causes Tides?

  15. What Causes Tides? • Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon.

  16. III. Surface Currents: a large stream of moving water that flows through oceans.

  17. Surface currents are mainly caused by winds. • Earth’s rotation affects the direction of currents. • Surface currents curve to the right in the Northern Hemisphere.

  18. Gulf Stream Current

  19. IV. Deep Currents: caused by differences in density.

  20. Density of ocean water depends on: 1. salinity • More salt = more dense • Temperature --cold water = more dense Renewable energy source???

  21. What Causes Currents? • Most currents are caused by differences in density and temperature.

  22. Upwelling: upward movement of cold water from the ocean depths.Draw the diagram below into your notes.

  23. Upwelling zones are home to enormous schools of fish

  24. In your notebooks…. • Describe waves, currents, and tides
