What Is K-12? • “Kindergarten and the 12 years of elementary and secondary education” • Kindergarten- 5-year old child goes through standardized curriculum for preschoolers • Elementary education - 6 years of primary school (Grades 1-6) • Secondary education - Junior high school (Grades 7-10) • Senior High School - Grades 11-12 • (Dep Ed Primer 2011)

Career Education/Counseling • Prepares students to make informed career decisions through: • awareness and understanding of individual qualities that contribute to success on the job (individual interests, skills, attitudes, talents, and abilities) • ability to use employment data and other resources to support decision making • awareness of the training and options available for success

Career Learning • Prepare students to take responsibility for their own futures • Help students take advantage of workplace opportunities and adapt to changing needs of local, national, and international economies • Help recognize individual abilities and how they relate to the world of work and develop skills necessary for adult life. • helps students to better understand themselves and their world as they progress through the educational environment and transition to adult life.

Career Development in the Academe • Earliest grades = awareness, exploration, and practice • Middle school years = use decision-making skills to merge individual data with their knowledge of the workplace and plan a high school course of study to meet their goals • High School and beyond = expand knowledge, skills, and attitudes through practice and application

Competencies Developed in Career Learning and Counseling Program • By end of Grade 4, students will be able to: • Demonstrate awareness and knowledge of work of family members, school personnel, and community workers • Demonstrate ability to obtain information about jobs from parents, relatives, adult friends and/or neighbors and share that information with classmates

Competencies Developed in Career Learning and Counseling Program • By the end of Grade 10, students will be able to • Demonstrate knowledge of learning opportunities offered at the senior high school level • Develop an individual educational and career plan that integrates interests, abilities, and skills, supports the identification of one or more career pathways, and includes tentative decisions and planning for high school and beyond

24. Competencies Developed in Career Learning and Counseling Program • By the end of Grade 10, students will be able to: • Demonstrate use of a range of resources to gather career information • Identify individuals in selected occupations as possible information sources, role models, or mentors • Consult with/observe adult role models at work to identify elements of their work and to determine need for specific knowledge and skills • Decide on what to concentrate on in Grade s 11-12

Competencies Developed in Career Learning and Counseling Program • By the end of Grade 12 students will be able to: • Locate, evaluate and interpret career information • Identify and explain rights and responsibilities of employers and employees • Demonstrate understanding of how employers and employees organize to improve quality of goods, services, and working conditions

Competencies Developed in Career Learning and Counseling Program • By the end of Grade 12, students will be able to: • Evaluate relationship between individual interests, abilities, and skills and achieving individual, social, educational, and career goals • Review and update individual educational and career plan based on progress, continued and changing development of interests, and awareness of importance of lifelong learning
