Internet Use • Kids use computers at higher rates than adults. • About 90 percent of kids ages 5 to 17 use computers, and 59 percent of them use the Internet. • One out of every four 5-year olds use the Internet . • 3 in 4 students use the Internet for help with homework. • More than half of students use the Internet for writing e-mail, sending instant messages, and playing games. 10News.com October 29, 2003

  8. Summary • Never agree to meet anyone in person that you meet online. • Tell an adult if anything happens online that makes you feel uncomfortable or frightened.

Strategies to Keep Kids Safe • Become familiar with the Internet. • Review Safety Rules with your children. • Know when your kids are online. • Know where your kids go when they are online. • Preview Web sites with your children. • Get to know your child’s online friends as you would get to know their actual friends. • Create and print family Internet rules.
