  1. Text Features! What are they - and how can we use them to be more effective readers?

  2. There are five general categories of text features.... Text Divisions Organizational tools Graphics Font and Formatting Style Layout

  3. Text Divisions Text Divisions identify how the text is organized and presented. Some examples are chapters, sections, introductions, summaries, and author information.

  4. Organizational Tools Organizational tools and sources of information help readers understand the information. Some examples are titles, table of contents, index, headings and subheadings, glossary, pronunciation guide, and references.

  5. Graphics Graphics show information that is easier to understand because of its visual representation, or enhances what was written in the text. Some examples are diagrams, charts and tables, graphs, maps, labels, photographs, illustrations, paintings, cutaway views, timelines, and captions.

  6. Font Size/Formatting Style Font size or formatting style, such as boldface, italic, or a change in font signals the reader that these words are important.

  7. Layout Layout includes aids such as insets, · bullets 3. numbers These features point readers to important information. Insets are blocks of additional important information, like definitions that the reader should know, or graphic information.

  8. Activity: In Groups: Examine your texts and answer all of the questions on your checklist. Individually: Fill out one of the text feature cards. Choose one of the text features we talked about in class and explain what type of information it can give you. *Make sure your name is on both pieces of paper before you pass them in*
