Integrated Southern Africa Business Advisory (INSABA)

The INSABA project aimed to promote productive use of renewable energy and provide business advice in rural and urban areas of Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, and Namibia. The project supported the development of a support structure and knowledge base for renewable energy, facilitated the cost-effective use of renewable energy in selected businesses, and gained recognition from political decision-makers for its integrated rural development approach.

Background Relevance Rural sustainable development can best be achieved when goods and services for which a market was identified, are produced in an ecological way and with energy generated from renewable sources. SME are considered as important promoters of integrated rural development and also play a key role in the urban (informal) sector. In advising, training and coaching SME, which use and provide RE, INSABA contributed to development and poverty reduction as well as to a broader dissemination of RE. Opportunities RE Technologies for small business mostly are modular; investment costs depend on the technology. In nearly all areas at least one renewable energy technology can be applied. Technological advancement can be used to produce power from sun, water, wind and biomass and reduce costs. Market assessment and the preparation of a marketable business plan for business ideas avoid loss of invested financial means.

Objective and Main Steps ObjectiveThe INSABA project aimed to support renewable energy based business and contribute to income generation.Main StepsThe project promoted a “Productive use” of renewable energies through the following activities:Business Advice, Training and CoachingInterdisciplinary advisors (IAs) were recruited from locally established organizations and received training in RE-technologies and business management. Market analysesVerified that goods and services produced in higher quality or quantity with energy from renewable energy systems are actually marketable in a way that the revenue covers the energy costs.MatchmakingRE providers and users were brought together to drive a process leading to system designs and energy services that are better adapted to the specific needs of the users.Policy dialogueRelevant legal frameworks were reviewed together with representatives of the four target countries’ governments and other decision makers.

  5. Results ResultsRealisation of business in selected pilot regions demonstrate cost effective use of RE in rural and urban areas in a productive way. Experts and members from locally established organizations being in charge of training, advice and coach producers of good and services as well as of RET (train-the-trainer approach), are trained.Jobs and income with producers of goods and services as well as with RE-system providers are created. INSABA approach considered as important concept for a legal strategy for integrated rural and urban development and for the formulation of a favorable legal policy framework for sustainable energy application.Increased energy security and even lower costs by using RE technologies.Increase the opportunities for south - south business negotiations.Local renewable energy actors are networked
