  7. Management of water • The management of water in Spain played a basic role in the economic development politics in Spain in the 20th century. • Number of reservoirs: from 60 to 1000. • Main problems droughts • (the last one in 2008)

Responsible authorities for Water • The main responsible authorities for water management in Spain are: • The Secretary of Environment • the state authority responsible for the management of the water resources and it fulfils this function by means of the General Direction of Water which is responsible for: • The creation of the National Water Plan, the regulation of the Vasin Plans and their coordination with the sectorial plans; • The information system of the water resources; • The coordination of the emergency plans; • The inspection and security control of the hydraulic infrastructures; • The establishment of the criteria for the preservation of aquifers; • The boost and promotion of activities regarding the purification and reuse of purified water and, in general, all the measures to favor saving water.

  9. National Water Council • The National Water Council, is a consultive organisation with the funcitons of water planning in Spain.

Vasin Organizations • In 1926 creation of Vasin Organizations main authorities regarding the management of water resources of the vasins and in charge of the administration of the hydraulic public domain • Main functions: • 1926: Infrastructure • Nowadays: Protection and sustainable use of water.

  12. Authorities responsible of the Vasin Organizations • Rivers flowing along one community: the autonomous community • River flowing along several communities: the Secretary of Environment

  13. Authorities responsible of the Vasin Organizations • The public administration, through different entities of the state and local administrations, is in charge of boosting the economic activities related to water and their public promotion.

  14. Authorities responsible of the Vasin Organizations • City councils have an important role in the final service to the users, such as water supply, cleaning up and purification of water. There is a growing participation of the private sector in these services though the cities maintain their regulation function.
