  2. Taste Sensations • Taste is the ability to dissolve molecules and ions called tastants. • The 4 primary taste sensations are: • Sweet • Sour • Salty • Bitter • The main organs involved in taste are the tongue, taste buds, and papillae.

Disorders • Ageusia – inability to taste. • This is caused by tissue damage to the lingual and glossopharyngeal nerves, which support the tongue. • The impulse of taste is unable to be transmitted to the brain. • Dysgeusia – distortion in the sense of taste. • Most commonly caused by antibiotic drugs. • Persistent use of certain drugs alters the taste buds ability to differentiate between taste sensations.
