  1. ColiSCAN LAB Water Quality

  2. Introduction • Water is the most important chemical compound on Earth. • It is our basis for life. • Because water plays an important role in our lives it is necessary that we regulate the quality of water. • Safe Drinking Water Act requires that drinking water be tested for certain organic and inorganic contaminants and make sure those levels are below the Maximum Contaminate Levels.

  3. Coliforms & Fecal Coliforms • We are testing water for indicators of microbial contamination. These organisms when found in high quantities can lead to diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, and dysentery. • Because this is expensive to test for some water test, test for indicator organisms. The results from this are assumed to be an indication of overall microbial contamination levels. • The most common indicator is coliform ; which are bacteria found in the intestines of mammals and include E. coli. The prescence of E. coli is accepted as an indication of some sort of human or animal fecal contamination. • Low levels are okay, but higher levels could cause sickness and could mean other pathogens are found in the water as well.
