The Land • Syria borders the Mediterranean Sea between Lebanon and Turkey. • Syria covers 185,180 square kilometers of Asia. • The Syrian Desert and Jebel Druze Range is in Syria. • Damascus is the capital of Syria. • Natural resources include petroleum, phosphates, asphalt, iron ore, rock salt, and marble.

Climate and Vegetation • Syria is mostly desert climate. • Syria has limited areas of natural vegetation, and there are few forests in Syria. • Yew, lime, and fir trees grow in the mountains and citrus trees grow along the coastal area. • Eagles, Buzzards, and Falcons can be seen in the mountains in Syria. • Wolves, hyenas, foxes, and jackals can be found in a few areas, and deer, bears, squirrels are rarely seen.

  5. Government • The president of Syria is Bashar al-Assad. • Syria has a republic government. • The population in Syria is 20.4 million people. • The life expectancy in Syria is 72 years for men and 76 years for women.

The president of Syria said the signs coming from the Obama administration had been "positive". President George W. Bush shunned Syria in protest of its support for militant groups such as Hezbollah and its friendship with Iran.

  7. Economy • Syria’s major exports include oil and gas. • The literacy percent in Syria is 77 percent. • The currency is Syrian pounds. One US dollar is equal to 46.5281 Syrian pounds.

  8. Culture • The major language in Syria is Arabic. Other languages include Kurdish, Armenian, French, English. • Major religion is Islam.

  9. Places to Visit • Aleppo Citadel is the most prominent historic architectural site in Aleppo. • Saladin Castle is considered one of the most prestigious castles of the medieval period.
