To do… • Copy the vocabulary: • Crescent moon: The phase of the moon in which the lit portion of the moon (as viewed from the earth) is less than a half-circle- right after and before the new moon. • Full moon: The phase of the moon in which the lit portion of the moon (as viewed from the earth) is a full-circle- about 14 days after the new moon. • First quarter moon: The phase of the moon in which the lit portion of the moon (as viewed from the earth) is a half-circle- about 7 days after the new moon. • Gibbous moon: A phase of the moon in which more than half is illuminated-before or after it is full. • Last (3rd) quarter moon: The phase of the moon in which the lit portion of the moon (as viewed from the earth) is a half-circle- about 7 days after the full moon. • Lunar cycle: The revolution of the moon around the earth causing changes in the phases of the moon. One cycle takes about 29.5 days. • New moon: The phase of the moon in which there is NO lit portion of the moon (as viewed from the earth)- about 14 days after the full moon. • Waning: When the illuminated portion of the moon is getting smaller. • Waxing: When the illuminated portion of the moon is getting larger. HINT: use activity 79, activity 80, Prentice Hall textbook

  3. To do… • During this activity we will begin to look at some qualities and properties of the moon, we will not answer all of the questions…yet. • Discuss the following: • Brainstorm at least six ideas and observations you have/have made about the moon. Write these in your journal.

  4. To do… • Glue in “My Moon Observations” • Write all of the dates starting with today. January has 31 days. • You will begin recording the moon every time you can view it. We will update the chart everyday in class. • Take a picture of the moon (“selfie” with moon in background?), and email it to Mr. Naberhaus. ONE person to do this everyday will receive a prize. • Glue in “Emily’s Moon Observations” • Make a prediction (draw for each day) with your partner from May 2 to May 11 • With your partner: Fill out the moon phases for all of May • Individually: Fill out the moon phases for all of June • Finish: • Emily’s chart • Vocab
