JEFFERSON BURR HAMILTON Lesson 1 – A New Party in Power • The Election of 1800 • Federalist – John Adams (running for 2nd term) • Dem-Rep – Thomas Jefferson • Dem-Rep – Aaron Burr • Results – Jefferson & Burr tie with 73 electoral votes each...vote goes to the House of Representatives • House takes 36 rounds of voting...change happens when A. Hamilton gets some to change their vote from Burr to Jefferson...leads to famous Hamilton/Burr duel

Lesson 1 – A New Party in Power • Judiciary Act of 1801 • Before Jefferson took office, Federalists pass the Judiciary Act of 1801...sets up new courts • In his last days as President, Adams appointed hundreds of new judges...wanted Federalists to control the courts • Judges didn’t get the position until they received their official papers, or commissions • Some judges didn’t receive their commission by the time Jefferson took office • Jefferson ordered his Secretary of State, James Madison, to not deliver the remaining ones • One man who didn’t receive his, William Marbury, took his case to the Supreme Court

Madison • Supreme Court rules against Marbury • This case establishes idea of judicial review • 1) Constitution is the supreme law...it is above any other laws • 2) Constitution must be followed when there is a conflict with any other law • 3)Judicial Branch can declare laws unconstitutional

  5. Lesson 2 – The Louisiana Purchase • Louisiana Purchase • France had gained control of the Louisiana Territory • French leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, had visions of creating an American Empire • Jefferson wanted to buy western Florida & New Orleans from the French for $10 million

Lesson 2 – The Louisiana Purchase • Louisiana Purchase • Napoleon gives up the idea of an American Empire after losing control of Santo Domingo (Haiti) • French asked the US if they would be interested in buying all of the LA Territory for $15 million • US said yes...basically doubles the size of the country

Lesson 2 – The Louisiana Purchase • Corps of Discovery Expedition • Purpose was to gather info about the LA Territory • Expedition was led by Meriweather Lewis & William Clark • Sacagawea served as a guide & interpreter (joined along the way) • Expedition left St. Louis in 1804...reached the Pacific in 1805

Lesson 3 – A Time of Conflict • War Fever • Problems with Britain continued...British attacked American ships and ‘impressed’ American sailors • James Madison wins Election of 1808...takes over as many are calling for war with Britain • Problems in Ohio between settlers and natives escalate as well

Lesson 3 – A Time of Conflict • War Fever • Tecumseh (Native leader) believed a strong alliance b/w Natives & British would keep Americans off their land • Tecumseh & his brother, The Prophet, expanded their native alliances into Indiana Territory • IN Gov, William Henry Harrison, attacked natives at the Battle of Tippecanoe & wins

  10. Lesson 3 – A Time of Conflict • War Fever • Defeat at this battle leads Tecumseh to ally w/ the British • War Hawks – those who wanted to go to war w/ Britain • June 1, 1812 – Congress declares war on Britain...start of the War of 1812

  11. Lesson 4 – The War of 1812 • War Begins • US enters war with many disadvantages • Small Army • Depended heavily on state militias • Commanders with experience (Rev. War) were too old to serve • Less than 20 ships in the Navy • Considered to be the second war for US independence

Lesson 4 – The War of 1812 • Famous Events • USS Constitution withstands British guns, earns nickname Old Ironsides • Oliver Hazard Perry (US) attacks British warships on Lake Erie, reports “We have met the enemy and they are ours.” • August 24, 1814 - British invade D.C., burn the city, Pres. Madison must flee to avoid capture • Francis Scott Key - watches attack on Ft. McHenry, scribbles down a short poem, poem becomes The Star-Spangled Banner

  13. Lesson 4 – The War of 1812 • Battle of New Orleans • Occurred January 8, 1815 • Gen. Andrew Jackson led US forces, stopped a British invasion • Casualties • Britain – 2000 • US - 20 • Battle occurred two weeks after the war was officially over • Treaty of Ghent (12/24/1814) ended the war
