The Ming Dynasty • The Ming Restore Chinese Rule • Chinese despised Mongol rulers • High taxes and corruption led to uprisings • Zhu Yaunzhang led a rebel army that defeated the Mongols • 1368 they founded a new dynasty called the Ming which means brilliant. • Their goal was to restore Chinese greatness • Restored: Confucian learning, civil service, censors to root out bureaucracy and corruption.

  3. Economic Revival • Ming dynasty was very productive • Fertile plains of the east were able to feed the population • Chinese cities become industrialized making porcelain, paper and tools • Extensive canal system • Increased technology

  4. Culture • Revival of arts and literature • Ming style of art developed • Literature enjoyed by all people, first novels and detective stories • Even today, Ming vases are very valuable

  6. China and the World • Voyages of Zheng He • 1405 Zhen He commanded first of 7 expeditions • 62 ships, 25,000 sailors • Between 1405-1433 Zheng He explored South East Asia, India, Red Sea and the Persian Gulf
