  1. CE 299 Welcome to Unit 4! Esin Esendal Provitera, Ph.D.

  2. Unit 4 Outcomes • Discuss learning theory application to an early childhood case scenario • Choose an artifact that applies knowledge of child development and learning theory in early childhood

  3. Course Outcomes Practiced in Unit 4 • CE299-1: Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge of child development and learning theory in early childhood settings

  4. Unit 4 Assignments The assignments for this unit are: • Readings • Discussion • Seminar

  5. Seminar Discussion Scenario: Julio is almost 5 years old and attends a Title I preschool class. The childcare professionals in the classroom have the classroom set up so that Julio can access materials of his choosing. Julio has ample time for exploration, child-directed activities, and play. The adults follow Julio’s lead while providing enough structure for him.

  6. Seminar Discussion Cont. • How can understanding learning theory assist in understanding Julio’s development?

  7. Seminar Discussion Cont. • These week on the DB you chose an artifact that demonstrates your ability to apply knowledge of child development and learning theory in early childhood settings. Take a moment to share about the artifact that you chose. • What class was it from? • What do you know about learning theory based on your artifact? • What more would you like to know?

  8. Unit 5 Project Looking ahead….

  9. Unit 5 Project Directions • For this project, you will choose one artifact from your prior coursework to meet the objective of family and community building. • As you look through your past learning experiences and coursework, you will find examples of community- and family-building artifacts in many courses. • Once you have chosen your artifact, you will then write a 1-2 page reflection on this artifact. • Your reflection must include a discussion of respecting the importance of individuality and cultural diversity of children and their families while building relationships.

  10. Unit 5 Project Directions (Cont.) • When writing your reflection, think about the following: • Your reflection is a description of what you have done, not what you will do. • Connect your reflections to your artifact. Explain why you chose this artifact as a demonstration of the outcome of family and community building and respecting the importance of individual and cultural diversity. • Discuss what you learned from the activity. • Describe any improvements you could make after reflecting on your learning activity, and what you would still like to learn. • Proofread your work: you should have no spelling or grammar errors, and you should use APA format.

  11. Upcoming Projects • The only other project that you will have this term is the final. Please take a look at the directions and come to our next seminar ready to discuss.
