Presidential Roles • Chief Executive • Carry out and enforce laws • Head of bureaucracy (cabinet members and heads of agencies) • Issues Executive Orders (which have the power of a law) • Chief Diplomat • Directs foreign policy • Makes treaties • Appoints ambassadors • Issues Executive Agreements • Issues trade sanctions and embargos

Commander in Chief Head of the military (all branches) Orders troops into battle (then must be approved by Congress) Chief of State Ceremonial leader and “face” of the United States Makes speeches, gives awards, throws out pitches at ball games, etc. Chief Legislator Proposes legislation Vetoes legislation Makes “State of the Union Address” to Congress Presidential Roles

Presidential Roles • Chief Economist • Helps the US economy prosper • Plans the federal budget • Chief of Party • Head of political party • Campaigns for other party members • Helps the party raise money • Chief Judiciary • Appoints federal and Supreme Court justices • Grants forgiveness with pardons (one person) or amnesty (group of people) • Can issue a reprieve (delay punishment until reviewed by a higher court)
