3. Slide Design…or not. Wow, this is a really bad example of a slide that you shouldn’t use during a presentation. First of all the type is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too small and all jumbled together. You would have to have the best vision in the world as well a lot of patience. When you create a slide in a powerpoint presentation it should have as little writing on it as possible. Because again, you are the presentation. Not the powerpoint. When you put graphics on the powerpoint slides they should be few and far between and support the text on each slide. Ugh, I’m already bored writing all this, imagine how your audience would feel. Instead of writing more I’m going to just copy and paste the pledge of allegiance into this sentence. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. That was fun. Now I will copy and paste the first page of a Tale of Two Cities: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way--in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. See, when your type is this small and your slide is this cluttered, no one even cares that I am writing this coherent nonsense. I bet you thought that I just typed a bunch of letters on here to fill a page. Nope. You know what else turns your audience away? Too many numbers! Like this: Did you know last quarter that Exxon reported it’s highest profits of $9.92 billion. That’s the most of any oil company. There was also a 32% increase in revenue up to $100.7 billion.The massive profit gains were widely expected giving the soaring price of oil. The price of a barrel of oil hit a record $70 during the third quarter and, even though it has backed off to $60.80 currently is still up 40% in 2005. It's not as if the industry didn't have difficulties with the damage of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In fact, ExxonMobil said oil production fell 5% during the third quarter and natural-gas production fell 9%. ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…Sorry I fell asleep from boredom just like you probably did just now. Instead of reading off a bunch of numbers, create a nice neat diagram that displays the numbers in an organized way. Only mention a few of them and keep the math simple! Well, now I’m going to move on to give a good example of a slide in a presentation. Can I make all the way to the bottom of the page? I bet you I can. Oooo, another thing to point out! Do you notice how I’m reading this entire slide without ever really making eye contact with you? Yea…that’s bad. You should know what’s on each upcoming slide. A quick glance should be all you need. There I did it. Told you I’d make it to the bottom. I wish you had more faith in me sometimes.
