  5. Benefits of the OSL • Storage virtualized by Enterprise Vault • Wide ranging support for storage systems • API based – new systems beginning support all the time • Multiple storage systems support simultaneously • Migration core part of the system – not an add on • Storage rationalization (compression & SIS) • Massively scalable

  6. Enterprise Vault™ to NetBackup™ Integration & Migration • Mixes High availability while reducing TCO • Reuses your existing NBU infrastructure • CAB files moved to NBU as part of collector migrator services • Disk staging solution • e.g. MS Exchange • Highest available storage • 0-90 days Primary Application SAN • Enterprise Vault • Highly available • Lower TCO • 90days – 3 years Enterprise Vault NAS • Enterprise Vault • Lowest TCO • 3 years – x years NBU Media manager

  7. Introduction to Pegasus • Roy Slicker • Co-Founder and President

  8. What does Pegasus add to Enterprise Vault • Pegasus enables Enterprise Vault to utilize new storage devices • InveStore is connectivity to removable long term cost effective storage media • Users are storing more data longer - access frequency goes down but requirements remain - tiered storage is the best solution • Benefits for both reducing TCO and reliable compliance storage • Users benefit by implementing a cost effective tiered archive storage solution • Pegasus specifically supports • New Plasmon and HP UDO based optical technologies - as well as legacy MO hardware • Pegasus best viewed as a ‘file system’ – InveStore is designed to utilize and track near-line and off-line storage media all under a single file system • E-Mail Archive, File System Archiving for EV, as well as NetBackup Archive Storage • Media management, extensive scalability and secure data integrity are core components of InveStore • Will require offline hardware • Pegasus aligning with resellers of EV and NBU that sell this hardware

  9. Lowering TCO of archival storage

  10. Offline media and Compliance / Risk Management Rule Regulation Summary UDO Compliance Features 17a-4 (a), (b), (c), (d), (e) Preserve data “for a period of not less than six years”, “three years”, “18 months” or for the “life of the enterprise” (depends upon the data type, audits, etc.). “…the first two years in an easily accessible place” UDO Write Once media ensures the authenticity and accessibility of the data. UDO’s highly-stable recoding surface delivers media life in excess of 50 years, minimizing the frequency of data migration and virtually eliminating media maintenance. Media can be removed from the library, freeing up capacity, yet remaining managed and accessible or until disposition. 17a-4 (f)(2)(i) “…if employing any electronic storage media other than optical disk technology…must notify it’s designated examining authority at least 90 days prior to employing such storage media.” SEC views optical storage as the standard or baseline. UDO is the next generation of optical storage. Plasmon G-Series Libraries will support both MO and UDO write once media, resulting in a 13+ years past data history plus current and future UDO Generations–all online. 17a-4 (f)(2)(ii)(A) Electronic Storage Media must: “Preserve the records exclusively in a non-rewriteable, non-eraseable format” UDO Write Once Media is true write once phase-change media (not software WORM), that is unaffected by magnetic fields and permanently alters the molecular structure of the true Write Once media, ensuring data integrity at the most fundamental level.

  11. Rule Regulation Summary UDO Compliance Features Sec 103 (1)(2)(A)(i) “prepare, and maintain for a period of not less than 7 years, audit work papers, and other information related to any audit report, in sufficient detail to support he conclusions reached in such report.” UDO Write Once media ensures the authenticity and accessibility of the data. UDO can store documents, images, email and other file types. UDO’s highly-stable recoding surface delivers media life in excess of 50 years, minimizing the frequency of data migration and virtually eliminating media maintenance. Sec 104(e) “Record Retention—The rules of the Board may require the retention by registered public accounting firms for inspection purposes of records whose retention is not other wise required by section 103 or the rules issued there under.” UDO offers flexible retention. The media can retain the data due to its media life in excess of 50 years. Sec 802 (a)(1) “…shall maintain all audit or review work papers for a period of 5 years from the end of the fiscal period in which the audit or review was concluded. On 22-Jan-2003 changed to “seven years after the auditor concludes the audit or review of the financial statements” UDO Write Once Media is true write once phase-change media (not software WORM), that is unaffected by magnetic fields and permanently alters the molecular structure of the true Write Once media, ensuring data integrity at the most fundamental level.

  13. Solution Architecture

  14. Specific benefits of Pegasus and UDO for VERITAS Enterprise Vault and NetBackup • Specific functionality important for current & new EV and NBU users • Provides fast compliance discovery for critical data within the archive • Audit and access compliance ramifications • Will create an off-site backup volume for the compliance or archive data • Significantly reduces recovery • Users can track both on- and off-line archive data via the VERITAS application, significantly reducing research times and recovery of data • All data appears on-line allowing inquiries on off-line media • Non-Alterable True WORM media for financial, medical and government applications requiring immutability and authenticity • SEC rule ( 17a-4 (f)(2)(i) ) states, "if storage media other then optical disk is used..." - additional reporting requirements are needed • Users are able to scale the system – adding both hardware and media capacity without any additional software or hardware management requirements

  15. Competitive Positioning and User Questions • The VERITAS/Pegasus partnership provides VERITAS with the component necessary to compete against the tiered disk, tape and optical EMC/Legato solution and HP’s File System Extender storage product • Back-end removable archive is not always the primary element in a storage deal, but increasingly part of a total solution – example Citibank • Questions to ask the User • Are you bound by any government regulations or requirements to archive any sub-set of your data for long periods of time on a secure storage system? • Have you considered the total cost of ownership of an archive storage solution; considering maintenance, power consumption, data migration costs, etc.? • Have you considered the benefits of utilizing a tiered storage approach, minimizing your primary storage and backup requirements, while extending a larger fully protected archive with fast access?  (TCO, storage more manageable, easier restoration, etc.) • If you are currently using Legato’s EMailXtender or DiskXtender software, have you considered the new VERITAS Enterprise Vault Email and File System Archiving product? • Pegasus provides far more cost effective archive storage connectivity coupled with the feature rich functionality of VERITAS EV and NBU.

  16. Solution summary Pegasus and UDO hardware provide a very cost effective tiered archival storage solution for Enterprise Vault and Netbackup Users: • Scalable, reliable, secure and disaster recovery functionality transparent to VERITAS application • Provides new and existing VERITAS users with add-on functionality to current VERITAS products • Backed by VERITAS • Certified and supported by EV and NBU product management & sales engineers

  17. Where to get more information • Solution pack available on VNET • Joint Whitepaper • Presentation materials • Sales battle card (contacts) • Existing Pegasus datasheets

  18. Summary and Q&A • Pegasus best viewed as a file system front end to offline storage (notably UDO) • Integration tested and works • Improves our overall ILM benefits • Lower TCO (change the media not the infrastructure) • Helps with Corp Governance
