  1. ECUADOR MRV & Capacity building status Andrea Bustos andrea.bustos@ambiente.gob.ec

  2. Thinking about capacity building efforts and needs, where do you think your country is in terms of addressing forest change, forest carbon stocks? Baseline of Deforestation Deforestation Drivers Incentives and Mitigation Measures

  3. LandcoverMaps 1990 2008 2000

  4. DeforestationRate 1990 - 2000 2000-2008

  5. Drivers of Deforestation One of the main drivers of deforestation is the expansion of the agriculture in frontier areas. For the two periods 1990-2000 and 2000-2008 the 99.4% of changes were found in the conversion of forest to agricultural land. Powered by monoculture like oil palm an sugar cane.

  6. Incentives and Mitigation Measures • Protect the forests and their ecological, economic and cultural values (4 million hectares). Objectives: • Reducing deforestation rates and emissions of greenhouse gases associated • Improve the living conditions of rural populations (approx. 500,000 participants)

  7. Prioritization Criteria • Areas with high threat of deforestation • Relevant areas for maintaining ecosystemic services. • Areas with high levels of poverty

  10. The more useful approaches became from the capacitation initiatives. What are the approaches from international cooperation that you have find more useful for advancing the developing of your country MRV system? • Generatedgeographicinformationwith more accurate data • Improve our understanding of what is already developed • Validatetheinformationreported • Establishprocesses

  11. Generatedgeographicinformationwith more accurate data Data Accuracy Accuracy(%) fortheyear1990: 69 % Accuracy(%) fortheyear2000: 73 % Accuracy(%) fortheyear2008: 76 %

  12. Improve our understanding of what is already developed

  16. UN-REDD PROGRAMME M FAO What are the current programs from international cooperation in your country that aim to develop capacity in the implementation of your MRV system? SILVACARBON OTCA R KFW – Climate Change

  17. Institucional • - Consolidation and Institutionalization of the Monitoring Unit. • RemoteSensing • DegradationMetodology • EarlyWarningSystemimplementation • Automation in ClasificationImages (ReapidEye, Landsat and Modis) • Integratedthedifferenttypes of remoteinformation (lidar, radar, drone, optical) • Reference Scenario • National inventory of greenhouse gas • Consolidation of the National System of Permanent Plots (2014) Can you identify the most immediate needs on capacity building for forest monitoring?

  18. SHORT TERM Polish our Baseline and Methodologies How do you envision international cooperation to assistance in the short term 1 – 2 years and in the long term 5 years from now? Keep generating accurate information, maintaining the process and improvement methodologies, because we still learning LONG TERM
