  2. Scheduling Professional Development • Master Schedule Building Workshop – November 24 & 25 • eSchool Scheduling – January 7, 2009 and March 31

  3. Plan of Action • Create scheduling team at each building with a lead administrator • Timeline of implementation for each school

  4. Hand Scheduling Special Education Students • Training on the process of hand scheduling special education students in the master schedule – January 6, 2009 • Dr. Amy Pleet, University of Delaware

  5. Special Education • Four Teams were created: • Administrator • Counselor • Special Education Department Member Educational Diagnostician Psychologist Transition Specialist Special Education Supervisor

Special Education • Process • Three sets of color coded index cards with students names – English, Math, Science/Social Studies • Data such as: DSTP scores, grades, disability, accommodations, Map scores, etc. • Discussion regarding above and the need for more supports. • Decision whether or not schedule needed to be adjusted. • Adjustments made to students schedules. • Process will be repeated before scheduling for next semester.

  7. Theoretical Bases for Block Scheduling • May help teachers employ more effective pedagogical practices • Student learning and long-term memory may be enhanced • Increases opportunities for individual attention which may bolster student motivation

  8. Goals of Block Scheduling Continuity of Instruction – number of daily classes is reduced; allows for students to concentrate on fewer courses and give teachers more planning time. Personalization of the School Environment – More time to develop stronger relationships; Teachers are responsible for less students. Choice in Instructional Methods- permit a varied approach to instruction; more time for guided practice Pace of Learning – Allows for increased attention for individual student learning needs; time for acceleration and remediation within the class periods; facilitates differentiated instruction Distractions versus Orderliness – Fewer transitional times; more time spent in class and not in the hallways; fewer discipline issues

  9. What conditions are needed for effective implementation of block scheduling

  10. Changing the schedule alone may not improve student learning.Changing the delivery of instruction is imperative.

  11. What has been done thus far to assist with changes in the delivery of instruction?

  12. Workshops • August 2007: Managing Instructional Time • Roughly 15 attendees • PPT was turnkeyed to the building administrators to use with staff • Included in New Staff Orientation – Summer ’07/’08 • Follow –up Winter ’09 at MHS Dept. Meetings

Workshops Brain Based Teaching with Leanne Nicholson - MHS (2-day, follow up to earlier workshops with w/Eric Jenson) Differentiated Instruction with SDE – AHS (2days, followed up in faculty meetings led by Ms. Rutter) Learning Focus Workshops – This week for MHS teachers College Board- Pre-AP and AP – This week for AHS teachers Thinkfinity- Series of after school workshops throughout the district

  14. Content Specific Workshops Mathematics Workshops – throughout 07-08 (9th grade Academy) and 08-09 (AHS) school years. MHS monthly curriculum based meetings. 6-Traits Workshop – Spring ’08, 1 or 2 days depending on need Social Studies – History Alive In-Service Science- Kit Training through the state science coalition

  16. Visitations December 07- Milford High School, DE – team of teachers and administrators. Focus on classroom instruction. (MHS/AHS) January 09 – Burlington Township High School, NJ – team of teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators. Focus on scheduling and math/world lang. instruction. (MHS)
