  1. The Moon Earth’s Satellite (Overview)

  2. Earth - Moon System Phases – Eclipses - Tides

  3. Moon Phases • Moon changes phases because it revolves around the earth

  4. Waxing moon / Waning Moon

  5. Lunar motions • How come we always see the same side of the moon regardless of its phase? • The rotation period and revolution period is identical. (fixed rotation) • 27 1/3 days revolution. • 27 1/3 days rotation wrong right

  6. Lunar Eclipse (Night) FULL MOON PHASE Actual Lunar eclipse • The earth passes between the sun and the moon and cast a shadow on the surface of the moon.

  7. Parts of a lunar eclipse Earth’s Shadow (very dark) Umbra Earth’s Outer Shadow (slightly dark) Penumbra

  8. NEW MOON PHASE Total Solar Eclipse(Daytime) • Happens when the moon falls between the sun and the earth (Daytime)

  9. Annular Solar Eclipse • The moon can appear slightly smaller in the sky when it is farther away in its orbit. (Apogee)

  10. Parts of a solar eclipse

  11. August 21, 2017 Total Solar Eclipse Path

  12. Total Solar vs. Total Lunar Eclipse • Why do we see Lunar Eclipses more often than Solar eclipses? • Ans. A total solar eclipse can only be seen by people living in a narrow stretch of the earth only about 70 km across • Lunar Eclipse can be seen by anyone at night that can see the full moon.

  13. Spring Tide • Combined pull of Moon and Sun • Very large tidal range (low tide to high tide) • Occurs during a New and Full Moon

  14. Neap Tide • Pull of Moon and sun are acting against each other. • Not a large tidal range • Happens during a 1st quarter and 3rd quarter Moon.

  15. Quiz • List the phases of the Moon in order starting at New Moon phase. • Which tide has the greatest tidal range? • Which part of the shadow is the darkest? • Umbra or Penumbra?
