  1. CAC and RFL – A Passionate Love Affair Greg Dowdy Kelly Knupfer -MSU-

  2. Introduction • Who we are • Greg Dowdy (CAC President) • Kelly Knupfer (RFL Event Chair) • How many of you have a CAC at your school? • Is it affiliated with your Relay?

  3. Four Pillars of Colleges Against Cancer • Survivorship • Incorporate Survivors all year long • This is why we fight • CAC should be a support network • Help survivors feel involved, appreciated, and recognized all year long

  4. Four Pillars of Colleges Against Cancer • Education • Committees need to know more about cancer and what it actually is. Try bringing in people that can talk about the disease and what it is. • Genetic mutations within the cell that cause cancer. How many people actually know this? NOT ENOUGH. Educate your committee and your campus FOR REAL. It is great for people to know how to fundraise to fight it, but it isn’t enough because we need to know how to actually prevent it ourselves.

  5. Four Pillars of Colleges Against Cancer • Advocacy “From a law enforcement perspective it is a matter of staffing, prioritizing calls for service, severity of crimes which are occurring, impact of crimes which we are attempting to prevent, and the fact that there are over 550 buildings on campus. The effect we would have upon enforcing the 25 foot rule through strict ordinance enforcement would be so small that our time would be better spent elsewhere where we would have more impact on safety.” • Actual COMPLETE statement from MSU Police when we asked them why they do not enforce a rule prohibiting anyone from smoking 25ft from a campus building • We started a petition to advocate for change • Find something worth fighting for on YOUR campus. • It will motivate your committee and bring a grassroots feeling of advocacy to the committee.

  6. Four Pillars of Colleges Against Cancer Relay For Life

  7. Sample Committee Structure • What we had • Sucked. • Different committees – Small group focused on CAC, larger group focused on RFL • People part of the RFL committee never realized they were part of CAC or doing CAC activities • What we have now • Doesn’t Suck. • Integrated committee and leadership. CAC President directs RFL chair. • RFL is the premiere event of the semester, but other events serve as year-round cancer fighting engagement and mini dress rehearsals for RFL

  8. Personalize Your CAC • We refer to ourselves as Spartans Fighting Cancer • This is more personal, and it gives us a way to relate to our university in a way that we find difficult by just calling ourselves “Colleges Against Cancer”. • We’re trying to build a grassroots movement, and we thought this was the best way to brand ourselves to make that happen. www.spartanrelay.com

  9. Fundraising Year Round • Fundraising year round is important and CAC is a great way to market your committee and your Relay while earning money at the same time. • T-shirt and apparel sales with catchy or attention grabbing graphics or slogans • If you can’t afford it, do a pre-sale to cover your costs • Allows you to gain financial flexibility in order to produce worthwhile events throughout the year

  10. MSU CAC Activities 2010-2011

  11. Breast Fest 2010 – Breast Cancer Awareness Bra Cookies Dress contest Breast cancer facts Held in central campus

  12. “Bra” Crawl

  13. GASO/Petition

  15. Paint the Campus Purple Week

  16. Upcoming Events • Hope Lodge • Mini Relay • St. Patrick’s Day Bar Crawl • Relay For Life

  17. Relay and CAC…The Ultimate Hook-Up • Personalize Your Fight Back Ceremony • Involve your CAC • Market it as the way to make a difference on non-Relay days • Cancer Education (Mission Delivery) Booths • More than just facts on posters • Make these booths interactive and use it to showcase what your CAC has been up to all year • GREAT recruitment for CAC! • Promote CAC through track announcements all night, tell people where they can sign up • Recognize Members and Promote CAC at Team Captain Meetings and Events

  18. Wrap-Up • Colleges Against Cancer and Relay For Life, together, can give any college a way to Fight Back against cancer every day of the year • RFL and CAC are two sides to the same coin • They work together to provide a year-long cancer fighting experience to your members that can be used to keep your membership up throughout the fall semester and spring semesters. • Gives people a purpose and a reason to Fight Back that doesn’t only center on RFL. You will keep your committee from burning out and you will make a name for yourself on campus at the same time! • Small Group Discussion
