  1. Into Activity: • Do you think it is fair that I can use my iPod, cell phone at school? • Can I send anyone to the office without a reason because I am a teacher? • Why or why not?

  2. The Magna Carta, Warand Changes in the English Government

  3. Today we will learn about new changes in the English government. Changes that are still in practice today.

  4. King John of England • Unpopular, cruel • Lost many wars (land in France) • People tired of failures and increased taxes • Excommunicated (expelled from the church) by the Pope

  5. King felt he could do what he pleased • Nobles wanted the King to recognize their rights • Wanted to limit King’s power • 1215, forced King to sign the Magna Carta • Magna Carta, which in Latin means the great charter

  6. Magna Carta • document listing nobles rights and rules for kings • Limited King’s power • Habeas corpus- no imprisonment with out reason • Approval of new taxes • Trial by jury

  7. Effects • The English found more ways to limit the kings power • Created Parliament -a council of nobles who make laws and advise the king (still used today). • Judges were chosen by the people instead of the king. • Helped bring democracy to England. • Democracy- rule by the people.

  8. Foundations of modern democracy begin • Gave more power to the people • Has influence the U.S Constitution • Fair trial • Right to own property

  9. English Parliament • Divided into two branches • House of Lords (inherited positions) • House of Commons (Elected positions) • Control money, taxes, pass laws • Kings now needed parliament’s approval to spend, tax, pass new laws and even declare war

  10. Centuries later England would become aRepresentative government • People elected to represent an area of England (a form of democracy) • Try to include all levels of society

  12. The Hundreds Years’ War • Series of wars lasting from 1337 to 1453 • Began when the king of France died without an heir (someone to take his place) • The King of England Vs. Powerful French lord argued who would be King of France • The French lord became king so the English king invaded France

  13. Joan of Arc • England was winning most of the battles • A French teenager, Joan of Arc helped lead the French troops into victory • The English captured her and killed her, but the French still won in 1453

  14. Effects of the War and Death • England’s Parliament power grew • War was expensive • The English kings lost power trying to negotiate (bargain) money for war • The French king’s power grew • King bonded with the nobles during the war and they continued to support him

Deaths from plague, war, famine (starvation), damaged all of Europe. • People began searching for an explanations and feudal structure began to crumble • Even the Catholic Church lost influence over its people • The Hundred Years War was a part of a series of events that shifted people's thinking

  17. The Long Bow: Changed warfare. • Used during the 100 years war proved a powerful weapon. • It could penetrate a knight’s armor from far distances. • English archers were effective against the French during the 100 Years War
