  1. Jan 2014/ Semester Review Know the location of your continents and the major countries that we have covered.

  2. North America Culture – values and beliefs of a group of people. Fivethemes of culture – Language, Religion, Government, Economy and Customs (music, sports, art, food, etc.) Canadahas two cultural regions. Do you know them? And that is because of what culture trait? United Statesmandatory (required) duties and voluntary civic duties. How do you define a culture region? Be able to compare the governments of the United States, Mexico, and Canada. What culture traits does the US have in common with other North American countries?

Limited and Unlimited Governments • Democracy – Limited people have rights and government have SOME power. • Ruled by many (people) who vote. • Dictatorship – (unlimited government), citizens have little or no decision-making power or rights, 1 ruler • Unlimited Governments are ruled by one or ruled by few (such as the Junta in Argentina) • How do the governments of Canada, the United States, and Mexico compare? • When governments change from limited to unlimited, what are some consequences? • What are some effective forms of protest in a democracy?

  4. Immigration • Why do people move? What are the Push and Pull factors that promptpeople move? Can you list some? • Immigration has made the United States a diverse country of many ethnic groups that have come together to form one identity. Therefore, the United States is referred to as a Melting Pot. • Canada is a diverse of multi cultures that have kept their own identity. Therefore, it is referred to as a TossedSalad.

Central America • Central America is an Isthmus. • What is an Isthmus? • Panama Canal : Why is it an amazing achievement? • What are the characteristics of Haiti’s culture? • What are some major economic activities in Latin America? WHAT IS THE PREDOMINANT RELIGION? How do entrepreneurs influence economies?

European Explorers (Conquistadors) • What influence did they have in Latin America? • They were in search of the three G’s: God, Gold, and Glory • Vocabulary: Mestizo & Mulattoes • Culture Borrowing - customs that were adopted by another culture. • Cultural Diffusion – the spread of culture from one group of people to another Colonial rulers of most countries were? Know the countries that are the exceptions! How have these explorers effected the Americas?

  7. Latin America (Mexico, Central America and South America) Compare and contrast • Cultural similarities? (think of the 5 themes) • Culture exceptions? • Major economic activity in Latin America • Know the three ethnic groups that influenced Latin America. • What religious group influenced Latin America?

  8. South America • Brazil… What separates it from other countries in South America? • Peru’s Natives – Incas Argentina’s Dirty War Unlimited Government Mothers of the Disappeared The Juntas

  9. Europe • Europe is a peninsula of peninsulas. • What is a peninsula?

  10. European Union • European Union – What does this do for the countries that belong to the Union?

Europe • Germany’s Past and Present Government • Geography of Europe (Such as the Ural Mountains of Russia) • Where is most of the population located and why? • Present Government Types of Europe • Vladimir Lenin’s significance to Russia • Vladimir Lenin and the Bolshevik Movement • What is a Czar? And the Unlimited Rule of Russia’s Past Geography of Europe
