  2. Sample One • A material will float on the surface of a liquid if the material has a density less than that of the liquid. Given that the density of water is approximately 1.0 g/mL, will a block of material having a volume of 1.2x104 in3 and weighing 350 lb float or sink when placed in a reservoir of water? 2

  3. Sample Two • For a material to float on the surface of water, the material must have a density less than that of water (1.0 g/mL) and must not react with the water or dissolve in it. A spherical ball has a radius of 0.50 cm and weighs 2.0 g. Will this ball float or sink when placed in water? (Note: volume of a sphere = ¾πr3) 3

  4. Sample Three • A star is estimated to have a mass of 2x1036 kg. Assuming it to be a sphere of average radius 7x105 km, calculate the average density of the star in units of grams per cubic centimeter. (Note: volume of a sphere = ¾πr3) 3

  5. Sample Four • A rectangular block has dimensions 2.9cm x 3.5cm x 10.0cm. The mass of the block is 615.0g. What are the volume and density of the block? 1

  6. Sample Five • A sample containing 33.45g of metal pellets is poured into a graduated cylinder initially containing 12.7 mL of water, causing the water level to rise to 21.6 mL. Calculate the density of the metal. 1

  7. Sample Six • The density of pure silver is 10.5 g/cm3 at 20˚C. If 5.25g of pure silver pellets are added to a graduated cylinder containing 11.2 mL of water, to what volume level will the water in the cylinder rise? 2

  8. Challenge • The density of osmium (the densest metal) is 22.57g/cm3. If a 1.00kg rectangular block of osmium has two dimensions of 4.00cm and 4.00cm, calculate the third dimension of the block. 4
