  1. THE RAINFOREST • We have learned about different birds in the rainforest and where you can find these birds. • We have also learned about frogs and how they live in the rainforest • Now we are going to learn about the four layers of the rainforest and what goes on inside! Vocab

  2. Vocabulary you should know • Concentration: exclusive attention to one object • Abundant: present in great quantity • Distinguish: to mark as different • Decay: to rot; to decompose • Hibernation: to withdraw; to spend the winter in close quarters To world map!

  3. Four Layers of the Rainforest

  4. Click on the words to learn more! Start from the top, and work your way down!

  5. Emergent Layer • This layer of the rainforest is the tallest • The Emergent layer is made up of few tall, wide trees that are about 130 to 250 feet tall • Since these are the tallest trees, this layer gets a lot of sun • There are a couple small monkeys that live here, one being the spider monkey Learn more about the spider monkey!

  6. Spider Monkey • They are found in tropical rainforests from southern Mexico to Brazil • These monkeys like to be in areas where they can find ripe fruits and insects to eat • Their tails can measure up to 89 cm and become almost like a fifth hand • Spider monkeys rarely fight, they will retreat in threatening situations Check Yourself

  7. ? Check Yourself • What do spider monkeys like to eat? Answer!

  8. Answer • Any insects and ripe fruit they can find Spider monkeys live in the emergent layer because they can find fruit and insects to eat. The fruit need sun and rain to grow, so that’s why the monkeys can find it here. Back to menu!

  9. Canopy • The canopy layer covers the rainforest • It is sometimes described as the “umbrella” of the rainforest • Many animals live in this area since food is abundant since this layer still gets a little sunlight and rain • One animal is the sloth Learn more about the sloth!

  10. The Sloth • Sloths eat leaves and bugs which can be found in abundance in the canopy • A sloth never has to drink water because they get water from the leaves they eat • The sloth defends itself with its sharp claws, but its best defense is being able to be camouflage • Sloths spend most of their lives upside down! Check Yourself

  11. ? Check Yourself • What is the sloths best defense? Answer!

  12. Answer Camouflage • The sloths camouflage helps to protect themselves against their predators Back to menu!

  13. Understory • Little sunshine reaches this area • The plants have to grow larger leaves to reach the sunlight • There are a large concentration of insects • There are also a lot of birds that live in the understory because there is a lot of room to fly around freely • One bird in particular is the hummingbird Learn about the hummingbird!

  14. Hummingbird • The characteristic distinguishing them from other birds is a gorget. • The gorget is the bright, almost glowing color on the throats of the males • At night a birds heart rate drops significantly, almost like hibernation Check Yourself

  15. ? Check Yourself • What is the distinguishing characteristic of a hummingbird? Answer!

  16. Answer The gorget Back to menu!

  17. Forest Floor Learn more about the Jaguar! • This is the darkest part of the rainforest • Since hardly any sun reaches this forest floor things begin to decay quickly • Many of the largest rainforest animals are found on the forest floor • The jaguar may be hard to find on the forest floor, but they are there!

  18. Jaguar • The second largest in the cat family • Jaguars can grow up to 6 feet long and 3 feet tall • They can weigh up to 300 pounds • Their paws have a lot of padding which allow them to move around the forest floor quietly • Jaguars usually hunt at night because they have great sight and can sneak up on their prey Check Yourself

  19. ? Check Yourself • Why can jaguars move around the ground quietly? Answer!

  20. Answer Back to menu! Their padded paws Take the quiz!

  21. Put the layers of the rainforest in order from top to bottom Canopy, Emergent, Understory, Forest Floor Emergent, Canopy, Forest Floor, Understory Emergent, Canopy, Understory, Forest Floor

  22. Correct answer: C. Great Job! Take next quiz!

  23. OOPS! TRY AGAIN! Here’s a hint: Back to question

  24. 1. What layer of the rainforest does this animal come from? Canopy Emergent Forest Floor Understory

  25. Correct! Understory Hummingbirds like to fly up, down, left, right, backwards, forwards and even in loop-de-loops! The understory has enough space for the hummingbird to fly around! Next question

  26. Try Again! Remember: This bird needs a lot of room to fly and move freely Back to question

  27. 2. What layer of the rainforest does this animal come from? Forest Floor Canopy Understory Emergent

  28. Great Job! Canopy The sloth like to eat leaves and bugs which can be found all over the canopy! Next question

  29. Try Again! Think about: What do they eat? Where would the best place be to find their food? Back to question

  30. 3. What layer of the rainforest does this animal come from? Understory Canopy Emergent Forest Floor

  31. Super Job! Forest Floor The jaguar has a lot of room to move around on the forest floor. They also find plenty of food on the forest floor! Next question

  32. Try Again! Remember: Jaguars can weigh 300 pounds and needs somewhere to walk around freely Back to question

  33. 4. What layer of the rainforest does this animal come from? Canopy Emergent Forest Floor Understory

  34. Correct! Emergent Layer The spider monkey can find the food that it needs and has plenty of room to hang around! Almost done!

  35. Try Again! Remember: What does the monkey eat? Where would they find this? Back to question

  36. GREAT JOB! You have read all of the information and answered all of the questions! Hopefully you learned a lot and had fun!
