  2. Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. As one of Canada’s biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to more than 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less marketing costs, to prairie farmers.

  3. Wellness Program History • Employee Health Committee established in the late 1970’s to assess employee’s response to a fitness program. • Committee investigated different types of employee fitness programs. • Approached the CWB Executive with a proposal • January of 1981 the Executive agreed to a 1- year trial period. • Full-time Fitness Coordinator commenced employment in August of 1981. • Program was up and running by March of 1982.

  4. Initial objectives of the program were to: • Improve fitness levels of participants through classes, which were enjoyable and invigorating. • Increase awareness of the relationship of lifestyle to health and well-being.

  6. CWB Wellness Program Today • Two (2) Components to the Program

  7. Fitness • 2000 sq.. ft. facility (newly renovated) • 4 treadmills • 2 stationary bikes • 2 ellipticals • 1 stairclimber • 1 concept 2 rower • Universal gym • Free weights • Body Bars, Stability Balls, Dyna-bands etc. • Showers and Lockers

  8. Fitness Classes • Volunteer instructors • Employees - trained in-house initially and then through MFC • Classes include, yoga, muscle, aerobic, step and stretch sessions. * Employees use the facility on their own time (before, after work or lunch hour)

  9. Program Funding Comes From: • Membership fees ($2.00/week – payroll deduction), (Contractors pay $4.00/week) • Fundraising

  10. Wellness • Health Education • Lifestyle Counseling • Lunch and Learn sessions • Demonstrations/Displays • Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Screening • CPR and First Aid training • Stress Management • Ergonomics • Disability Management

Other Program Offerings... • On-line Newsletter • Employees are sponsored to take part in various community events (Manitoba Marathon, CIBC Run For the Cure, Terry Fox etc,) • Bike rack is located in the building • Easy access to running and walking trails (Forks, St Boniface) • Health and fitness resource library • Special events (Week of Wellness, Anniversary Celebrations, Mini-Golf Tourney, etc)

Some Important Facts: • Of approximately 435 employees, 208 are registered as fitness members (about 48%). • In 2001 the national average for lost time due to illness was 8.5 – 9 days per full-time worker. • CWB- the average was 3.99 days in 2001. • In 2004 the CWB lost 3.84 days due to illness.
