  2. Mental Disorders • A. Disorder – A disturbance in the normal function of a part of the body. 1. There are 230 types of mental disorders. 2. 1 in 5 children and adolescents may suffer from a mental disorder.

  3. II. ANXIETY DISORDERS • A DISORDER IN WHICH INTENSE ANXIETY OR FEAR KEEPS A PERSON FROM FUNCTIONING NORMALLY.

  4. AN EXAGERATED FEAR OF A SPECIFIC SITUATION OR OBJECT. A. PHOBIA

  5. B. PANIC ATTACK • INTENSE REAL FEAR • 1. RAPID BREATHING, SWEATING, FAST HEART RATE, AND NAUSEA

  6. C. Obsessive-compulsive disorders • compulsions are urgent, repeated behaviors • rechecking something or doing something over and over

  7. D. POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER • PEOPLE WHO SURVIVE A LIFE THREATENING EVENT

  8. E. GENERAL ANXIETY DISORDER • People who tend to worry about everything.

  9. III. PERSONALITY DISORDER • A psychological condition that affects a person’s abilities to interact normally with others.

  10. A. Passive-aggressive personality disorder – These people don’t like to be told what to do. • 1. If told to do something, they may act passively by not participating or aggressively by yelling at the person in charge.

  11. B. Borderline personality disorder – They have trouble in close relationships with other people.

  12. IV. MOOD DISORDER • When people undergo changes in mood that seem inappropriate or extreme.

  13. A. Bipolar disorder • 1. Dramatic mood swings for no apparent reason • 2. Increased energy during the up swing. Depression during low swing.

  14. People lose interest in life and can no longer find enjoyment in anything. 1. 20% of teens suffer from depression. B. Major Depression

  15. C. SCHIZOPHRENIA • People lose contact with reality. • 1. They imagine things happening to them that aren’t real.

  17. A. ANOREXIA NERVOSA • IRRATIONAL FEAR OF BECOMING OVERWEIGHT • STARVATION

  18. 1 OUT OF EVERY 100 TEENAGED GIRLS MAY SUFFER FROM ANOREXIA • PERFECTIONISTS • SIDE EFFECTS: LOWER HR, BP, BODY TEMP, BREATHING RATE, LOSS OF MENSTURAL CYCLE FOR WOMEN

  19. B. BULIMIA • EATING LARGE AMOUNTS OF FOOD FOLLOWED BY PURGING

  20. 1. SYMPTOMS – DEHYDRATION KIDNEY DAMAGE, ACID IRRITATES THROAT AND ERODES THE ENAMEL OFF THE TEETH.

  21. C. BINGE EATING • UNCONTROLLABLE URGE TO EAT LARGE AMOUNTS OF FOOD. • 1. SYMPTOMS – OVERWEIGHT.

  23. A. Teenage suicide • 4th leading cause of death among 10-14 year olds • feeling that there is no way to cope

  24. 3. Self-injury • Burning or cutting to express emotions.

  26. VII. HEALTH CARE SERVICES FOR MENTAL HEALTH

  27. A. Therapy • An approach that teaches you different ways of thinking or behaving. • 1. Therapy gets to the root of your emotional and mental problems and helps you work to find a solution.

  28. B. Individual therapy – The individual and therapist meet alone for sessions.

  29. C. GROUP THERAPY • MEETING WITH A GROUP WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS.

  30. D. Family Therapy • MEETING WITH FAMILY MEMBERS WHO SHARE THEIR PROBLEMS.

  31. E. DRUG THERAPY • USE OF DRUGS TO REDUCE A MENTAL DISORDER

  32. VIII. MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS • A. PSYCHOLOGIST – Mental health professional who is trained and licensed by the state to perform therapy.

  33. B. CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER • LICENSED, CERTIFIED MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL WITH A MASTER’S DEGREE IN SOCIAL WORK.

  34. C. PSYCHIATRIST • MEDICAL DOCTOR WITH A SPECIALTY IN THE TREAMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS.
