Do Now: On you map of Europe you made early in the unit, mark the locations and years of the following Battles using page 594 of the text: Ypres, Tannenberg, Somme, Verdun, First battle of the Marne, Gallipoli, and Caporetto Objectives: Students will be able to...(1) interpret a primary source for key information about the armistice (2) be able describe WWI after American Entry into the war. Homework: Print the document on Mr. Collison’s Website under “Day 11”, and answer the questions posted underneath it.

  2. The War at Sea • American Admiral – William Sims • Britain vs. Germany on the seas • Britain sent ships to hunt U-Boats (Not Very Effective) • Merchant Ships trying to be sneaky • Sims proposes convoys (Brilliant!) • Ships travel in packs along with warship escorts

OMG! • Riots Break out in in Russia in 1917 • Scarce food and fuel • Czar Nicholas II abdicated throne • Bolsheviks led by Vladimir Lenin overthrew gvt. • Brest-Litovsk pulled Russia out of war • They lost land, but German troops left land • Germany free to focus on Western Front

  4. The failure of the German offensive • Germany – Focused on Western Front and made one last BIG offensive • Americans captured Cantigny • French and American Troops repelled Germans at Chateau-Thierry

  5. The Battle of the Argonne Forest • American offensive • 600,000 Troops • 40,000 TONS of supplies • 4,000 Artillery pieces • Victory after victory and shattered German Defenses
