Alignment with NCEA • The curriculum is due to be implemented in 2010.  We need standards that are aligned to the curriculum for 2010.  • This means that the draft standards need to be with the Ministry and NZQA by the end of June 2009 so that final evaluation and registration procedures can proceed.

  19. NCEA continued... • The first stage of the process will involve the contractor developing a draft matrix of standards that cover the key curriculum outcomes at curriculum levels 6-8.  • Awhina Gray is the contractor for te reo Māori.

  20. NCEA continued... • The second stage will be developing draft standards from this matrix, and dealing with any duplication and credit parity issues.  • Consultation will occur for both of these stages – probably targeted for the first stage and national for the second. 

  21. NCEA continued... • The third stage involves fine tuning the matrix and standards as a result of the feedback from the consultation.  • Exact timing of these stages is still unclear.

Future Planning • What is having the best effect on improving the quality teaching and learning of te reo Māori • What is the best spend of resource? • Who is responsible for ensuring resources and other work programmes are tailored to address the “other” te reo Māori specific needs of the NZC? • What additional resource is needed due to the unique and layered position of te reo Māori in the NZC?
