Iowa City Bar Scene • 2009- Iowa City Council Members met to pass the 21+ ordinance. • There was “too much binge drinking” happening amongst college students. • Bars, now, only allow people that are 21+. • Bar violence, underage alcohol abuse, miscellaneous crime and the volatile feel to downtown Iowa City has lowered significantly.

  3. Iowa City Music Scene • Most bars are venues. • The music scene now suffers because of the 21+ Ordinance. • Most high school or college students cannot attend concerts. • Several venue owners say revenue is falling. • There has been a decrease in national acts traveling to Iowa City.

  4. Solution

  5. Solution • Portland, Oregon is a model city for this solution. • Mid-2008 portland’s OLCC passes all age bar law. • Strengthened security. • ID’s checked for facial constructions. • “Wet” and “Dry” areas inside bar/venue. • Tree System.

  6. Consequences • More jobs. • Bloom of music scene. • Insurance rates lower. • Less underage drinking. • Everybody wins!
