Compare the three women • Mama: • Appearance:She is a large,big-boned woman with rough,man-working hands. • Daily chores:she can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man.And she work outside all day,and she also can eat pork liver cooked over the open fire minutes after it comes steaming from the hog. • It proves that Mama is a hard-working and labourous woman,and she is good at “a man’s job” .Though she has her better dream,she distinguishes the dream and the reality. • On the education:though Mama never had an education herself,she attached importance to the education.She sent her daughter Dee to Angusta to school. • So,from this we can see Mama reprensents an image of the majority black women in the lower classes at that moment.
Analyse Dee • Appearance:she is lighter than Magie.And her feet were always neat-looking,as if God himself had shaped them with a certain style. • She is a beautiful and fashionable girl . • Character: she would always look anyone in the eye,hesitation was no part of her nature. • So she is very confitent. • Still,she is standing off under the sweet gum tree.She used to dig gum out of;a look of concentration on her face as she watched the last dingy gray board of the house fall in toward the red-hot brick chimney. • Not arrogant but selfish and inhospitality. • She has an good education, but she hates her family’s life.When she returns her home,she has changed her attitude towards the black tradition radically.She wants to be a better life and to get rid of her life in the lower classes. • Daring to revolt the society and the reality and dare to be a better life.
Analyse Maggie • Appearance:she has been like this,chin on chest,eyes on ground,feet on shuffle,ever since the fire that bured the other house to the ground . • She is a docile weak girl. • Stand hopelessly in corners,homely and ashamed of the burn scars down her arms and legs,eying her sister with a mixture of envy and awe.She think her sister has held life always in the plam of one hand. • Demonstration her homely and introverted chancter.And also expressing Maggie’s admiration aboat her sister and also showing Maggie’s simple and seemingly important role in sociey without complaint. • Maggie attemps to make a dash for the house in her shuffling way,but I stay her with my hand. And she stops and tries to dig a well in the sand with her toe.Maggie’s hand is as limp as a fish and probably as cold,despite the sweat and she keeps trying to pull it back. • A kind-hearted and weak and no complaint girl.
Still,though she has been promised,she realized that she doesn’t need those quilts as she affirms”I can member Grandma Dee without the quilts.”Maggie receives what she deserves and as implied as the title.She appreciate the gift far more than Dee ever could.
Summary:according to analyse the three women’s apearance and character,it signifies some society’s problems and controdictary between the white people and the black people.And their attitudes towards black people’s culture and also signifies the sharp race discrimination during the period of the Black Power Movement.
