  1. Learning Together • A DECD program for families with children aged birth to three • Located in areas of ‘disadvantage’ in 7 communities • Aims to engage families in their children’s learning

Program model • Early childhood educators work with families in a range of activities • Working with concepts of learning in the everyday, attachment and wellbeing • Learning Together uses a strengths based approach to families (not an expert or deficit model) • A participatory and collaborative style of engagement with families

  3. What impact does Learning Together have? • An extensive internal evaluation was conducted from 2010 to 2013 • Several reports were published, culminating in the Final Impact report and Technical report which were released in 2013.

  4. Increased numbers of families are engaging in activities that support literacy and numeracy development more frequently • 100% of children are engaging with books at least sometimes • 78% of families are engaging with libraries, both borrowing and attending programs

Conclusion • Involvement in Learning Together has significant effects on families’ knowledge, confidence and behaviours • Research points to clear links between these effects and improved outcomes for children • Learning Together is a powerful long term strategy for families to support their child to achieve their potential.
