Lesson 2.2.3 Identifying Rates of Change

This lesson focuses on identifying and calculating rates of change over intervals, understanding the significance of rates of change, and utilizing technology for analysis. Topics covered include interpreting slope, finding average rate of change for functions, and analyzing graphs. Prerequisite skills include calculating slopes given points and interpreting slopes based on signs. The lesson will enable students to answer questions related to rate of change calculations.

  2. By the end of this lesson, I will be able to answer the following questions… 1. How do I calculate the rate of change over an interval? 2. What is the rate of change used for? 3. How do I use technology to analyze rate of change?

  3. Vocabulary • Slope and it’s meaning: 2.

  4. Prerequisite Skills with Practice Finding the slope of a line given points: Interpreting slope based on signs:

  5. Calculate the average rate of change for the Function between x = 1 and x = 3. • Calculate the average rate of change for the function f(x) = x2 + 6x + 9 between x = 1 and x = 3.

  6. Use the graph of the function to calculate the average rate of change between x = –3 and x = –2.

  7. For the function is the average rate of change greater between x = –1 and x = 0 or between x=1 and x=2?
