  1. CTMM project Research Atrial Fibrillation RACE 3 – AF Risk Profile - Ablation Clinical Research in Atrial Fibrillation GUIDE - Department of Cardiology Prof. dr. Isabelle C. van Gelder, e mail: i.c.van.gelder@thorax.umcg.nl UMCG Dept. of Cardiology thoraxcenter • Identification of mechanisms underlying atrial fibrillation (AF risk profile) • Identification of risk factors and modifiers underlying • New onset AF • Progression to permanent AF • AF associated cardiovascular morbidity and mortality • Improve therapy of AF – patient tailored therapy focusing on early AF (RACE 3, pulmonary vein isolation) • Does AF elimination reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality (EAST study) RACE 3 - Multicenter Study - Aggressive rhythm control for prevention of early atrial fibrillation compared to routine therapy AF Risk Profile - Identification of a risk profile to guide therapy in atrial fibrillation. Identification is based on clinical factors (age, sex, underlying disease, body mass index, sports, e.o.), echocardiographic factors, circulating biomarkers and genetic factors Pulmonary vein isolation - Epicardial and endocardial pulmonary vein isolation for the cure of atrial fibrillation and reduction of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality (EAST study) Assessment of atrial remodeling at the scene of the calamity, i.e. the atria, using echocardiography. Treatment effect of amiodaron or flecainide on atrial remodeling and the long-term outcome after treatment ECV
