  3. Ancient Greece -- Democracy The Greeks gave ordinary people the right and the responsibility to take part in government affairs. In their direct democracy, citizens took part directly in government decision making.

  4. Ancient Rome -- Representative Government In the Roman republic, citizens had the right to vote and elect officials. Civic virtue meant loving their country more than themselves, and participating in civic affairs.

  6. Primary Elections Voters elect one candidate to represent each party. The winning candidates then run against each other in an election for President.
