  2. Settling TheAlbemarle Region 1. In 1672, The Quakers arrive to NC and start to fight with Anglicans over farm land 2. King goes after Quakers for not paying taxes or joining the army, create the Navigation Act. 3. Quakers move to piedmont region, since they can’t fight the king nor can they pay taxes 4. Victory for the King as most Quakers move onto Native lands or pay twice as many taxes if they stay near the coast 5. Most people in NC get tired of the double taxation and begin to use “Rogues” or just refuse to pay their taxes

Culpeper’s Rebellion Key People Key Events Thomas Miller & Thomas Eastchurch tell the king everything the people do and don’t to Both want to be supreme governor and set up key people to be punished by the king George Durant goes to En gland to plead with the Proprietors as well as buy weapons to arm the Albemarle region. When he speaks with the Proprietors they do not believe his accusation against Miller/Eastchurch and support their decisions. Rather than be imprisoned, Durant flees home and threatens to start a rebellion. On the way home Eastchurch stops in Cuba to get married and gets very sick. While on honeymoon he hears that Miller has arrived in NC and is acting like a dictator. Eastchurch rushes back to become the governor and put Durant/Miller in their places. When he arrives back, his illness has gotten worse and he dies. Hearing the news back in England, the Lord Proprietors send Governor Sothel to the Carolina Colony to establish order, but he is captured by pirates and kept prisoner for years. Durant and his followers finally capture Miller and his crew and imprison them for trial, but secret letters by Eastchurch prior to his death appear and name Miller as the main cause of trouble in the new colony. Durant is cleared of charges. • Thomas Miller – temporary governor of NC • Thomas Eastchurch – Main tax collector of NC • George Durant – Rogue and leader of NC citizens • Governor Sothel – Governor sent by king to replace Miller

  4. Cary’s Rebellion Key People Key Events 1701 – The Lord Proprietors try again to establish control over Carolina. The divide the region up into small sections called “parishes”. 1703 – Each parish is given one official Anglican Church, Everyone in the parish had to be baptized, married, worship and buried at that local church. All citizens were now considered property of the Anglican Church, including the Quakers. 1704 – The Test Act mandates that all citizens must swear an oath to the Anglican Church. Governor Cary used this act to keep Quakers from holding any office . The King tires of the Proprietors and word arrives that a new governor will be sent and Carolina prepares for war . 1705 – The new governor arrives and is very mean and cruel. 1708 – Cary joins the Quakers and promises if they help him win back the office of governor he will let them hold office and not swear allegiance to the church. Cary and the Quakers fight the new governor and win. 1711 – Edward Hyde is sent as the new governor and to establish order. With the help of English soldiers, he overthrows Cary British Redcoats are now permanently on NC soil and non-Anglicans mass move to the piedmont • Thomas Cary – Anglican governor removed from office, who later helped the Quakers • Edward Hyde – Sent to control the rebellion and to govern NC • The Lords Proprietors – 8 friends of the King appointed to rule NC • Quakers – religious group in NC who the Anglicans attempt to remove
