  1. Assistive Technology By: Lisa Cameron ED 505-93

  2. Assistive Technology Defined According to Cornell University Law School, Assistive Technology may generally be defined as follows: • “The term “assistive technology device” means any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of a child with a disability.” • “The term “assistive technology service” means any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device.” In other words, any device or service needed for the success of an individual with disabilities is considered Assistive Technology (AT).

  3. Laws Concerning Assistive Technology There are several laws regarding Assistive Technology: • Americans With Disabilities Act – protects students with disabilities from discrimination • Telecommunications Act of 1996 – Section 255 – requires manufacturers of telecommunications to make equipment and services accessible to those with disabilities • Assistive Technology Act of 1998 – provides state grants for those in need devices or services

  4. Laws Concerning Assistive Technology (con’t) • Rehabilitation Act • Section 501 – prohibits discrimination in the hiring and placement of those with disabilities in federal employment • Section 504 – prohibits discrimination of those with disabilities in federally funded or federally conducted programs • Section 505 – sets up enforcement procedures of the Rehabilitation Act • Section 508 – an amendment requiring federal agencies to make available electronic and information technology to those with disabilities

  5. Examples of Assistive Technology The following pages will provide examples in the following areas. It should be noted that this list is not exhaustive. • Hearing impaired • Seeing impaired • Learning Disabled • Physically Disabled

  6. Hearing Impaired FM systems allow hearing impaired students to focus on the teacher’s instruction rather than sort through background noises that can be associated with a hearing aid. FM systems also allow for multiple hearing impaired students.

  7. Seeing Impaired The Braille Sense U2 allows for students to take notes and upload to a storage device.

  8. Learning Disabled The LivescripeSmartpen records all that is written and spoken so that the student may focus more on what is spoken than what needs to be written in notes. There is an option for the student to rest from note taking and simply record what is being said.

  9. Physically Disabled Assistive technology can be as simple as using a rubber band for physical disabilities. This student is using such tool to assist in controlling the pencil.
