  3. What are the assumed roles of: Males- built to provide & protect. Muscles, tough, durable, aggressive. Females- built for domestic work. Nurturing, caring, petite, and fragile. Known definitions of masculinity & femininity are now based on research rather than just on tradition and common knowledge.

  4. What is the main difference in the way men & women use their brains? • Men’s brains are specialized, while women use both sides. • This means men are better about concentrating on things and women are better at multi-tasking.

  5. How does each gender differ when looking for a mate? Males- value physical appearance more, typically prefer younger mates. Women- place emphasis on social class & income, typically prefer older mates, tend to be less aggressive Examples of exceptional choices for each gender.

  6. Give Mead’s findings for each group. • Arapesha • Male & Female conditioned to be passive • Both were taught to be cooperative & empathetic • These are consistent with stereotypical behaviors of females in our culture.

  7. Give Mead’s findings for each group. • Mundugumor • Males & Females were trained to be aggressive & ruthless • Were unresponsive to others needs

  8. Give Mead’s findings for each group. • Tchambuli • Genders displayed opposite roles to that of Western Culture • Men were the care givers to the children and women were leaders and directors of the tribe. *Gender roles are not fixed at birth, human behavior is the result of multiple caueses.

  14. Define the following vocab words: Sexism & Occupational Sex Segregation

  15. Women have hit the work place hard in large numbers and have had great success climbing up the ladder. False- Women are running into the “glass ceiling” in the work place, largely in part to the idea that they will have to take time off to have children and take care of children.

  16. What types of things have been done to women legally that could be seen as discrimination? Laws prohibiting them from certain jobs Regulating leave Restricted health care Laws not enforced equally

  19. How does each group see ageism? Functionalism- Treated accordign to the role the aged played in society. Modern society sees age as a negitive because they do not have the skills to keep up with technology. I have to teach Coach Bradley how to use his email, TV, Wii, and cell phone.

  20. How does each group see ageism? Conflict Theory- In and industrial society older members are pushed out of the work force to make room for the youngsters due to cost and technology. This is why Coach Simpson shows all the moves in the Wrestling Room, and has to wrestle with the guys.

  21. How does each group see ageism? Symbolic Interactionism- Children are taught untrue stereotypes of old people from a young age. I was taught that I have to do the physical stuff, instead of Coach Bradley because he will break his hip if he does.

  22. Most older Americans are living above the poverty line. False- Social Security is not enough to keep one a float in today’s economy.

  23. Why are the elderly seen as a major political power? They turn out and vote in massive numbers.
