The Color Purple Theme • The main theme is Role of Women • Examples of theme: - Celie was raped by her father and he took away her children - Father sent her off to be married to an abusive man -Man only marries her to take care of his 4 kids, look after the house and work in the field -Kicks Celie’s sister out of house because she wasn’t pleasuring him sexually -He brought home his dealthy ill mistress for Celie to take care of her -Celie was never educated

Beloved Theme • The main theme is slavery and racism • Examples of theme: -Sethe a female ex slave kills her child in order to save her from the misery of slavery -Sethe was haunted by the ghost of her dead daughter -Sethe was raped and forced to murder -Slaves were traded as commodities whose worth could be expressed in dollars

  4. How the Themes Interact • Both deal with the thought of people of lesser power being treated badly • Sethe and Celie were both taken away from family members • Both from a time period when slavery and women’s rights were not active

  5. Why were the Stories Grouped together? • Both feature sexual violence and useless men • Sethe/Celie both not educated • Both deal with the experience with oppression and discrimination • The role of women theme is expressed throughout the novels

  6. How do these books relate to some course themes? • 2 stories we have read have delt with the role of women. (The Yellow Wallpaper and The Story of an Hour • All have in common me are superior to women • Freedom is trying to be reached in all the stories • In “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “The Story of an Hour” they are trying to seek freedom from their husbands while in Beloved and The Color Purple they are trying to seek freedom from abuse and violence from their owners.
