Writing that something ‘annoyed’ the USA or USSR is not enough! Can you explain how • The Truman Doctrine • The Marshall Plan • …..worsened relations between the USA and the USSR?

Ideally, you should write about a cause, an event and a consequence. • BUT sometimes these questions start with Briefly explain the key features of the events of…….With these questions, it’s best to stick to explaining 3 events (ie. what happened) • Always underline words in the Q to get you focused on what it’s asking you • You can get a C for one developed key feature, and an A for two. So if you’re running out of time in the exam, you could sacrifice a paragraph. A second key feature of X was…….. Add no more than 3 sentences to explain. A third key feature of X was…….. 4. Explain why relations between the USA and USSR worsenedin the years 1949–55.(12 marks) REASON One reason why relations worsened was because the USA formed NATO in 1949. NATO was a defensive alliance of 11 western European nations and the USA. The nations which joined NATO agreed that an attack on one of them was an attack on them all, so they promised to help defend each other if one country was attacked. The USA even put missile bases in NATO countries like Britain, Italy and Turkey. This worsened relations because Stalin suspected that NATO was an aggressive alliance aimed against the Soviet Union. He was paranoid that western Europe, under the leadership of the USA, was ‘ganging up’ on the USSR. This led to Stalin forming the Warsaw Pact in 1955 to counter this threat. A second reason why relations worsened was because of the formation of the Warsaw Pact in 1955…. EXPLANATION Write about 3 reasons in this way to get 10/12 (A grade) DOUBLE- LINK IT

  5. Examples of part c questions…. • Explain why relations between the USA and the Soviet Union changed in the years 1948-53. • Explain why there was an uprising in Hungary in 1956. • Note that part c questions can focus on: • Specific events or topics • Why relations between the Superpowers changed/worsened during a specific period • …so you need to know your dates! If you write about events which are outside of the dates stated in the question, the examiner has to see these points as irrelevant, and you won’t get marks for them.
