  2. Objectives The first of the many and varied ‘issues’ that we will cover in this unit concerns advances in electronic technology. We will consider the considerable effects that recent advances have had on the travel and tourism industry, under the following headings: • ■ E-tourism • ■ E-retailing • ■ Developments in Information Communication Technology (ICT).

  3. E-tourism Write down what you think this means? • E-tourism is the use of ICT to enable tourism providers and destinations to operate more efficiently, and to reach and serve consumers more effectively. • As one of the world’s largest and most ‘global’ industries, the travel and tourism sector is as exposed as any other to the threats and opportunities brought about by all the developments in ICT.

E-tourism The travel and tourism industry has, in fact, embraced ICT for at least the last 50 years – SABRE, the world’s first airline computer system, for example, was developed by IBM and American Airlines in 1953. ICT has long been valuable in the area of air traffic control, automation and networking of distribution channels. Today, online booking systems, with their facilities to search, compare and buy tourism products, have revolutionised the way the industry conducts its day-to-day business.

The advent of the internet (see table below) has had a profound impact on the travel and tourism industry. ‘Travel’ has become the single largest category of products/services sold over the internet, and the proportion of business being transacted through this medium is constantly growing. • According to the Office of National Statistics In 2012, 33 million adults accessed the Internet every day, more than double the 2006 figure of 16 million, when directly comparable records began.

  7. Today there is a growing use of the internet by public tourism organisations such as National Tourism Organisations (NTOs) and Tourism Information Centres (TICs). Many of the travel and tourism suppliers, such as airlines, hotels, tour operators and rail companies are focusing more and more on the opportunities offered through the internet.

Task-e-travel • In no more than 400-500 words discuss (in your textbooks) the advantages and disadvantages to e-tourism compared to using the more conventional method, the travel agent. • Do you think there will always be a need for the travel agent (shop) yes/no explain. Higher mark band work: Make use of real life examples and statistics to back up your discussion

  9. E-retailing E-retailing is the selling of travel and tourism products via electronic means – over the internet. Over recent years, the internet has been a major issue in the travel and tourism industry – particularly among travel agents, who are concerned about the likelihood of business ebbing away from them. In this section you will look at the following: • The popularity of e-retailing • What is driving the growth? • Developments in ICT

Task Travel is currently the largest e-commerce category on the internet, representing around one third of total online transactions. • Using the textbook and any other resources make notes on why you think e-retailing is so popular. • Describe what is driving the growth of e-retailing in travel. • Analysis the developments in ICT and its impact on e-retailing in travel. Higher mark band work: Make use of real examples and statistics to support your notes.

Individual Homework Task • You will each create your own poster to present to the rest of the class in next Monday’s lesson, you will use today’s lesson, and homework to complete. • You need to each chose an issue that has affected the travel and tourism industry. • You will use the topic section from the core text book to explain the issue and you will do further research using newspaper reports etc. • You will find recent case study examples within the last 5 years such as the terrorist attacks in London 2011. Find any relevant data relating to it such as the economic problems on tourism organisations after the London bombings. • Think of a research question that could be used within the issue, remember it must be accessible eg; be able to find data on it
