  1. Population Explosion Your Subtitle Goes Here

  2. 4 BASIC NEEDS • AIR • FOOD • WATER • SHELTER

  3. AIR • Clean air is a scarce commodity • Human activity means pollution in the air • More pollution=more human activity=less oxygen • Fossil fuels add 5.5 billion tons of carbon to the atmosphere yearly • More people means more carbon dioxide=less oxygen

  4. FOOD • The human body requires a certain amount of calories to survive—fortunately our capacity to produce food has matched our capacity to produce kids • As population goes up—demand goes up—capacity goes down • By the 1980’s 11 major oceanic fisheries had been depleted to the point of collapse • By 2008 an additional 30 nations will be unable to feed themselves

  5. WATER • All living things require water for survival • More people=more demand for water=less water • 4 of every 5 people lack access to fresh water • As people increase, waste increases which is usually dumped into the water

  6. SHELTER • Building shelters requires materials • As mans numbers increase, the availability of resources decrease • Since World War II an area the size of China and India has been so damaged by human activity that it has lost most of its biological activity • 1/3 of the earth’s surface (land) on which nearly 1/5 of humanity lives is threatened by desertification

  7. CAUSES OF OVERPOPULATION • SEX—OBVIOUSLY—cultural factors--like male dominated societies and demand for Boy babies

  8. CAUSES… • MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY—Spending billions to cure diseases but setting up planet earth for a serious population problem

  9. CAUSES… • RELIGION—many religions actively oppose birth control “every child is a gift of God”

  10. CAUSES… • ECONOMICS—most poor countries have no welfare system, no social security, etc... By having many children they get a “living” retirement system. Labor intensive farming—breed your own workforce

  11. CAUSES… • Lack of family planning in poor nations—either not available or not well delivered
